Played FF5 for the first time in 20+ years. It's still an exquisitely designed and balanced game; I tore through it in just three days. The way Freelancer/すっぴん works is an elegant way to reward the player for mastering jobs, and I'm shocked modern games with job systems haven't iterated on it.

Also really like Houka. She's a little bit obsessive and unhinged, but her nefarious activities extend to letting Hotaru hold onto her on the train, and she's yet to deliver any monologues about Prometheus stealing fire from the gods or whatnot. Exemplary of the balance millsage is striking so far.

Finished the millsage scenario and all associated content currently in Our Notes. I went into it solely because I was smitten with Hotaru's design, but it exceeded expectations. It depicts darker psychological states while staying grounded. Halfway between Ave Mujica and Sasakoi, you could say.

Scenario presentation is very good at least. They don't skimp out on the Live2D scripting and there are even some fully animated scenes. The font is absolutely TINY though, to the point where it's legitimately difficult to read... and I'm on an iPad Pro.

thoughts on Taiari after finishing the final episode just now
fantastic final episode. from beginning to end taiari truly lives up to the premise of "fighting games + yuri". the sport itself and the relationships that intertwine and develop within it are afforded equal gravity, as exemplified by the final episode's structure. it cares deeply about the human connections engendered by the competitive environment, which is why the concept succeeds in execution. it helps that there is actually a strong central plotline that allows the characters to grow and change.

as an anime it's very competently produced as well. attractive character designs (i think mio and yuu are really cute in particular) and great voice acting bring the cast to life, and the production deftly manages its resources to effectively depict pivotal moments and infuse the SF6 matches with pure hype and aura. having not read the source, the pacing and structure of the series felt natural. ryuuou no oshigoto is a series i find similar in concept to taiari, and its anime is abysmal dogshit, so i was happy to see taiari succeed where it failed.

a particular takeaway for me is mio's character. the way she captivates and elevates those around her simply by being herself was something i found really compelling. aya deserves to win her heart and i am rooting for her. (as a corollary, the anime could have ended by teasing future manga arcs, but it chose to end with the camera focused on aya and mio. another example of how this is actually a real yuri series that takes the yuri elements seriously.)

i do think the anime ending has a little bit of a "okay go read the manga for more" vibe, but it's hard to complain when it's so much of a complete package otherwise. i WILL, in fact, be reading the manga for more.

I'm increasingly convinced that the English localization of Limbus is the gold standard everyone in the field should be studying. The writing runs the full gamut of topics, emotions, and registers, and the translators nail every last one. Some assorted screenshots from earlier in the new update.

Something I noticed is that if you get Alice up real close to the camera you can see that she's a 3D model despite looking 2D at a distance. Pretty neat graphical style.

okay now I've beaten MM11 too unfortunately it was pretty bland and sauceless... also really easy, I got the 1cc achievement without realizing hopefully Dual Override can recapture some of the classic MM magic, because 11 ain't it

beat MM10 too not super huge on this one, the level design isn't as tight as 9 and I'm not a fan of the bosses/weapons either still, both 9 and 10 manage to feel like authentic classic Mega Man in a good way I had never played them until now, glad I decided to give them a chance 11 up next

had some time to kill so I played through Megaman 9 I appreciate how tight the pacing and balance are compared to a lot of MM-likes and even other actual Megaman games it's on the easier side but that's mostly to the game's benefit

finished MGS4 last night, it was good enjoyed how it tied MGS1-3 into one narrative and brought the characters closure if I were to rank the individual games it'd be 2 > 4 > 3 > 1 not a fan of stealth/simulation gameplay so the gameplay in 4 regressing from 3 doesn't bother me

love how the noodles stay on Yuu's head throughout this entire scene Tai Ari manages this really compelling blend of shounen rivalry, over the top comedy, and genuine yuri relationships I've bought all of the manga, but I'm enjoying the anime so much I'll wait for it to end before reading it

Recently I also played Turbo Overkill, another modern FPS with character action elements and an emphasis on fast movement. I didn't hate it, but it's a flawed game in many ways. I'd only recommend it if you've already exhausted Ultrakill and Eternal. See attached images for more in-depth thoughts.
Discord post:
Finished Turbo Overkill. If you just want the tl;dr: If Ultrakill is a 100/100 and Doom Eternal is a 90/100, this game is a 60/100.

The core moveset and weapons are its greatest assets. Incredible player mobility and a wide variety of offensive options ensure that the moment-to-moment gameplay is never boring. In a word, Doing Stuff is fun, and that's why you're playing these games, so Turbo Overkill at least has the fundamentals down. Unfortunately, I think it falters in nearly every other area.
The biggest issue, one that permeates every other aspect of the game design, is simply that it's very imbalanced. I played on the second highest difficulty (highest is essentially a OHKO mode), and I wouldn't describe it as either easy or hard, but swingy. One moment you're dominating the enemies with overwhelming firepower, the next you're dying from being offscreened by a single homing missile or laser beam. You never really improve at any encounter, you just memorize which spawns to alpha strike to make it trivial. Ultimately this results in the gameplay feeling very repetitive.
The arena design itself is just okay. The first episode mostly consists of fodder enemies running at you, but they do put some real effort into the arenas in episodes 2 and 3. You'll find yourself going through the same motions regardless of terrain: alpha strike the enemies who have OHKO moves, grind through the fodder enemies for resources, quickswap whatever else into oblivion. There are also way too many places where you can just play peekaboo and charge up big guns without putting yourself in danger.Discord post:
Ammo exists but it's mostly a fake system. You get so many pickups that you almost never have to worry about conserving any particular type of ammo. There's also a sustain system wherein you can regain HP/armor by killing fodder with the slide. This is fun to do, but since fodder don't respawn, it feels like it exists outside the combat loop. An awkward middle ground between the elegant systems in Eternal and Ultrakill respectively.
The sound design really sucks. All of your weapons sound like wet farts, and the lack of clear audio cues for anything enemies do contributes to the cycle of being offscreened. The game as a whole would be substantially improved by better sound design.
Overall I don't hate the game, but frustrations won out over fun factor. I think it's worth a single playthrough if you're starving for more character action FPS gameplay, but I can't see myself ever returning to it.

All content in Ultrakill cleared on Brutal. I don't think I have it in me to P rank all of layers 7 and 8 right now, but maybe sometime before the full release. Sisyphus is DT4-tier hard. He took me 5 hours of real attempts plus another one or two spent practicing him in the sandbox.

the translation of Limbus is so good lol "glasses of substantial bulk and liberal refraction" is the punchiest turn of phrase I've seen in a hot minute
Limbus Company narration (Yi Sang): By conventional definition, the title "researcher" refers to those who bear glasses of substantial bulk and liberal refraction, those who so seldom depart their seats that their neck, back, and tongue alike have grown stiff. Here, however, were researchers of unconventional vocational disposition—some boasting the physique of a circus strongman, some who were engrossed in embellishing themselves with the latest cosmetics and clothes...

Crymelight is a bit of an odd duck, in that it's Furyu making a roguelite that draws inspiration from Hades and Slay the Spire. I found the combat pretty fun once I had a handle on zooming around and tossing enemies, and the idea of constructing poker hands with your Pick Threes is novel enough.

Anomalith is more fun than I expected. While it's a AA-tier title, it leans into its aesthetic strengths. I found the liminal spaces compelling thanks to evocative art design. The script is many levels above the average game. No curveballs yet, but Romeo quickly crafts an intriguing cast and world.

I had fallen behind on the Botan anime as it was airing, so I used my Saturday to sit down and watch all of it in order from the beginning. Truly a masterpiece of an adaptation. Every episode is made with exquisite care; at no point is it simply going through the motions of adapting a manga.

Finished Mina the Hollower. Two complaints: 1) It really should have had permanent upgrades instead of just trinkets and subweapons; it would expand the possible design space significantly. 2) The story is frankly absurd. If there were more text this would be a bigger problem than it is now.
