(1/2) I often look back at my attempts at creative writing from a decade ago and wince. However, I'm sure that I was doing the exact same thing back then and will likely be doing it a decade from now. If anything, it at least helps me appreciate how much I've progressed in that time.

Some of my favourite effects in videogames, especially older ones, are those that sell the idea that the rest of the world exists beyond the boundaries of the playable space. Simply seeing a hallway fade into the darkness beyond a sealed door will suffice... but this? THIS!? Look at it! WHAT!?

I thought Half-Life might be the obvious answer, or Duke Nukem 3D, but thinking about it... was 10 when Duke came out and 12 when I first played Half-Life. Origin game for me would be either Lemmings or Zool on the Acorn Archimedes.

The Core's pre-disaster maps will set up dozens of little stories; Every window and door you pass will offer a bite size chunk of life in Black Mesa. A few hours later, when you return, you will end each and every one of those stories with some variation of very loud noises and meaty splatters.
