I feel like the main theme of The Amazing Digital Circus is "Nihilism." Does any of this matter? Do our actions really have meaningful consequences? Pomni believes it's all real. Jax believes none of it is. Pomni believes even the NPCs deserve respect. Jax doesn't even think the other humans do.

Their diametrically opposed perspectives on the circus and all those within it are the heart of the story, but it can be seen in the others. Gangle struggles with depression and finding value in herself. Zooble is never comfortable with their body. Ragatha is terrified of being rejected.

While none of these problems are inherently nihilistic, the very nature of The Circus elevates their struggle. What *is* value in a place like that? Why does the body even matter? Do you even *need* the approval of others? They must *find* value in themselves, others, and "rules."

Because "value" is a social construct. We create it theough our perception of reality; we create codes of conduct, we create systems and behaviors to "inprove" our lives. It's impossible to confirm whether or not there is an "intrinsic" value in anything; ethics, people, etc.

But most often, people find value in each other, in themselves, in community. So we work towards uplifting, protecting, and uniting people. Pomni sees The Circus as a place full of people, and finds comfort in valuing them. Jax sees The Circus as a place of fiction, and fears valuing them.

Jax was going through the worst event of her life when she got trapped in The Circus. Years of abuse, a fight where she thought she might have killed her mother, then finding herself homeless and afraid. Now trapped forever in a gaudy videogame, in a body she hates, with silly looking strangers.

Jax is a pressure cooker of trauma and abuse. So while she tries, initially, to play by the social rules she'd always perceived prior to the circus, the moment that trauma is brought to the surface, her response is *destructive.* She alienates the few people she dared let get close.

Jax hurting others is her way of emphasizing (mostly to herself) that it's all a "game." None of their conflicts/concerns are "real," in The Circus. So why bother treating each other well? Why bother improving or building connections? They don't matter. They can't matter. Or she'd be a monster.

Pomni starts out strongly disconnected from everyone. She finds The Circus deeply distrressing. Loud, colorful, often obnoxious, and existentially horrifying. She is immediately given the impression that this place is all a construct, and its whims are dictated by a mad god.

But then, she meets an NPC, Gummiegoo, who has no idea of his own existence. His meaning. And once the truth of his existence is made evident to him, he has to come to terms with whether or not his life has meaning. Pomni assures him: It does. And this is her first step.

Pomni doesn't want to make anyone feel like they have no value. Like there isn't something worthwhile, inside. Even if their existence is all 0s and 1s. Which is why the reveal that they're all scans is so profound: it's the ultimate test of Pomni's values. She, too, is an "NPC."

They all had their issues with Jax, obviously. She'd been an abusive asshole, largely (though secretly) responsible for the abstraction of at least one (possibly two) people, who actively physically and emotionally attacked and bullied them. But they also, more than anyone, could empathize.

Even before the scan reveal, The Circus was an existential nightmare. A prison run by an insane A.I. that could not see them as true people with their own autonomy. Where food and sleep were pointless. Where the days would blend together and losing touch meant a fate possibly worse than death.

So they all knew that Jax was coping in her own way. Struggling, like any of them. That she, too, was a flawed person, making sense of an impossible situation. Not excusing her. Not forgiving her. Not even *liking* her. But telling her, "You're still one of us." And that could have saved her.

People want to paint Jax with broad brushes. She was a bad person; there's no question about that. Some of her actions could even register as unforgivable. But she, much like many abusive people, her actions were trauma responses. Actions to "protect" her, to keep her from spiraling.
