Studying some basic anatomy rn and it surprised me to learn that when you rotate your hand the motion is entirely in your forearm, with the ulna and radius bones completely crossing over Makes sense when you think about it but I definitely wasn't conscious of the motion before

Finished watching JJK S3, some thoughts: - Sendai Colony definitely wasn't a great way to end the season, too high energy - Glad that they included that shot of Miwa ominously walking - It was a lot more atmospheric than I expected it to be, but harder to follow than the manga

Just posted a monthly progress update on my website:
Progress Update: October 1st, 2026

Last month I completed the remaining work on the audio assets, added some additional polish to the soundboard, and began designing themes for it. The visual aspects of the work are not coming to me as fast as I had hoped though, so I plan to continue with that this month.

Finally started watching JJK season 3 today, currently at episode 3 Visually it's very impressive but I feel like I'd have a hard time following the story if I had not read the manga

It always takes me by surprise how different the same colors can look on different screens. This iteration should hopefully work better.

Until this week my concerns about AI revolved around its socioeconomic implications, unethical practices in the accumulation of training data, and its cognitive effects. But now I'm more concerned about its capabilities not plateauing, which I assumed would have happened by now.

Progress Update: September 1st, 2026

I've spent the last month going over various sample databases, and learning a bit about audio editing, musical instruments, and music theory in general. Currently I have three instrument soundsets and a basic SFX library down (though the latter is still in need of some editing), and I hope that these will serve as a good foundation for games made with the engine, as well as being useful in the soundboard as default presets.

Once the remaining work on the audio assets is out of the way I hope to add some visual polish to the engine.

Finally solved a bug that had been kicking my ass lately. My game engine treats keys with modifiers as semantically unique (e.g. Keyboard["SHIFT+X"] and Keyboard["X"] are not simultaneously true). Usually this is what you want but apparently not always. (1/3)

Progress Update: August 1st, 2026

The soundboard is now functionally complete but it still lacks assets. This month I'm hoping to develop a small library of sample sounds, implement a few instrument presets, and maybe some alternate skins. Once those are out of the way I intend to release a new version of the engine, and continue catching up with the documentation work.

If you had told me 5-10 years ago that AI would get where it is today and I would have no interest in it I would not have believed you But the way we got here, and the way AI is being leveraged, is so rife with ethical issues that IMO the best thing to do is to steer clear of it

Just found out about Uruky while checking my nginx logs. Seems like it's an EU-based, privacy focused alternative to Kagi. Might just be my impression, but I feel like activity in the search engine space has been ticking up over the past few years.

It's surprising that the GNU Project still has not made an official decision about LLM generated code. (Apparently - please let me know if I missed something, but I can't find anything other than Stallman saying that they were in the process of deliberation ~4 months ago)

Taking some time out of my day today to learn what the vibecoders are up to. Not that I'm going to vibecode myself (even setting aside all ethical/cognitive issues, I'm just too detail oriented for it), but it's not a good idea to be so oblivious to what's going on in the space.

People are rightfully upset about Sony's decision to kill physical game media, but that same transition happened on PC through Steam ages ago, and noone cared because it was opt-in and convenient. If you're going to care about digital ownership rights care about them everywhere.

Progress Update: July 1st, 2026

Last month went as planned - I completed the sandboxing work for the time being, documented it in the manual, and returned to working on the soundboard. Most of the soundboard work so far has been about elaborating the features and the general look and feel of the program. This month I'm hoping to continue that work, and see if I can get it demo-ready.

Anthropic's email setup is broken and they keep trying to send email that fail DKIM, DMARC checks. This has been going on since at least last year. I guess AGI isn't here yet. @anthropic.com here are some logs to help you figure it out.

News from the Postfix mailing list: a scan of the codebase using Mythos has found some new denial of service vulnerabilities, and the fixes will go up in about a week. This comes after a recent review using Opus 4.6, so I guess the Mythos hype wasn't all smoke and mirrors.

Been writing tomes of documentation for my game engine lately. Generally a good principle in software design is to minimize the amount of explanation you need to do, but sometimes you can't avoid complexity. Thankfully this is all aimed at advanced use cases. #enginedev #indiedev #gamedev

Testament to the state of the sofware industry: freeCodeCamp monthly sponsors have finally fallen below 10k after peaking in March 2025 at 11k. Also the first item in their latest newsletter is an ad about how you can get past CAPTCHAs and ratelimits to build AI datasets. Bleak.

Progress Update: June 1st, 2026

Sandboxing work continues - since the last progress update I've mostly been working on improving the sandboxing features of stateful APIs such as Window and Audio. In June I'm hoping to finish this work, update the documentation to reflect the changes implemented over the last two months, and hopefully bubble back up to where I had left off, which was the soundboard app.

Just finished watching Yu Yu Hakusho, and apparently it's been exactly one year to the day since I began watching it! I really loved it, even the final arc, and found the conclusions for the main cast surprisingly poignant.

Progress Update: May 1st, 2026

My main concern over April was implementing the sandboxing fixes I had mentioned in the previous progress update, and generally improving the engine's sandboxing capabilities. This work is now mostly finished but certain aspects of it still need to be ironed out, so this month I'm hoping to focus on that.

Progress Update: April 1st, 2026

Over the last month I worked on implementing the Keyboard API, which you can read about here - the gist of it is that it allows direct access to the keyboard state, and is intended to supplement the keymap API. Afterwards I noticed some issues in the engine's sandboxing implementation, and I'm currently working on fixing them.

Another massive supply chain attack today, this time it's axios on npm. Earlier attacks were driven by github actions vulnerabilities, but what we're seeing now is the cascading effects of earlier compromises, and previously stolen credentials being leveraged. It's become a contagion at this point

There's been a surge of supply chain attacks lately due to github actions misconfigurations, and it's likely to continue due to github's default settings being unsafe. Might be a good idea to put a moratorium on upgrading from package managers that install from github directly.

Writing code in my engine at runtime to test things out Here I'm testing whether new elements overwrite old ones with the same name This is used to lazy-load elements (like autoloads in emacs), so that elements can be available without actually loading them #gamedev #enginedev

Progress Update: February 1st, 2026

January was a bit slow on the programming front, I tied up the few loose ends regarding sound work in the engine and put active development on the back burner a bit to focus on my art and sound skills. I hope to continue this approach for a few more weeks at least, and then begin work on the soundboard.

Progress Update: December 1st, 2025

Sound work continues. Last month I implemented soundset objects (which contain sound assets), and the Audio API (which allows you to play sounds & control currently playing sounds from Lua), but the last section of the work, menu sound settings, remains under development.

This month I hope to finish work on the menu sound settings and finalize the sound work.
