Medieval cartographers drew dragons at the edge of the unknown. It seems an appropriate place to pause. I’ll be away for a couple of weeks while the next series finds its shape. Until then, the dragon can keep watch.🐉 #Wonder #Literature #CreativeWriting #Drawing #Substack Original artwork and video

#Wonder isn’t the opposite of knowledge. It may be what makes knowledge possible. My piece on #Substack this week is on a blue flower, a goldsmith's hammer, a spinning room, and the child you were instructed to outgrow. #lotus #ancientegypt #rumi #sufism #philosophy #meaning #orientatiin #art

There are paintings we admire. And there are paintings that seem to breathe. My newest essay begins with Van Gogh’s The Starry Night and follows wonder across art, language, and myth. I’d love to hear what you think. #vanGogh #art #ancientEgypt #wonder #philosophy #paintings #mythology #culture

#AncientEgypt may have told one of the oldest stories ever written about reading badly. A prince steals the #Book of Thoth hoping for power. Instead, the book reveals who he is. My latest essay explores why reading is less about acquiring #information than becoming someone capable of carrying it.

The Cup and the Flood: On Being Informed and Being Nourished
On a painting, a word, and the strange hunger that no algorithm has yet learned to feed.

While writing The Cup and the Flood, I kept returning to a simple image: A jug can pour endlessly. A cup can only receive so much. Perhaps wisdom has less to do with finding more information than with learning what deserves a place in the cup. (One of my sketches for the essay.) Link in 1st comment.

One sentence from my #Substack essay this week: "Information is not nourishment. Information is availability." #culture #orientation #nourishment #information

The #internet has made civilization available. It has not made it digestible. My latest essay explores the difference between #information and #nourishment. ( #substack #culture #philosophy #media #orientation)

Sometimes we do not only miss people or places; we miss the feel of life itself: the smell of #newspapers, black ink on our hands, letters written slowly, #cassette tapes, #library cards. #Nostalgia can be grief for an older world’s textures.

What helps a person not give up completely? While writing about #Sisyphus, I found myself wondering whether #hope is less a #belief than a #habit. My first essay explores #Camus, #myth, #resilience, #faith, and the small reasons we keep going.

524. A LUDIC SOCIETY 👉 www.thevideogamelibrary.org/book/a-ludic... @letobili.bsky.social @eugenpfister.bsky.social @josephineabaird.bsky.social @welmenreich.bsky.social @nataliedenk.bsky.social @monakhattab.bsky.social @appliedgames.bsky.social #GameStudies #Gamesky #Booksky #Gaming #Book
The cover of "A Ludic Society" presents a playful and modern design, set against a teal background. It features an isometric illustration of a cityscape with buildings in white and a central structure in vibrant pink, creating a focal point.

The design incorporates gaming elements, such as pixelated graphics and game-like icons, suggesting a theme of playful interaction within society. The title "A Ludic Society" is prominently displayed in bold yellow and white text, capturing attention.

Edited by Denk N., Serada A., Pfeiffer A., and Wernbacher T., the cover hints at an exploration of playfulness and games in the context of societal interactions. The overall aesthetic is engaging and contemporary, appealing to those interested in the intersection of games and culture.

Contemporary game scholarship offers a broad palette of theories and methods inherited from such fields as sociology and communication studies, experimental sciences, literary analysis, educational sciences and cultural critique. At large, this inherently interdisciplinary research aims for a holistic perspective on the ‘LUDIC SOCIETY’. With that in mind, this book is organized into four sections that present related and often intertwined ideas and observations about the ways we manifest ourselves in games and play, how games represent us in the present and in the past, how games and play change us, and what it all may mean for contemporary society.

This book invites readers to engage with the key challenges of a ludic society, explore new perspectives and initiate fruitful discussions. It is aimed at both passionate game scholars and all those who want to get a first taste of the multifaceted research field of game studies.

The happy season in #Vaasa, #Finland, begins with the glow of a grand #Christmas tree, festive music in the air, and the enchanting Venetian Carousel spinning in the heart of the city. #Vasa
