Dr. MHM @mollyhm.bsky.social · 24/09/2026Just going to note that (current) 34 CFR 602.37 outlines the appeals process. The agency can appeal the SDO's decision to the Secretary during which time the decision is stayed. There's also an appeal after that to the courts, but doesn't come with the stay. 010
Dr. MHM @mollyhm.bsky.social · 11/09/2026It's funny to me that my most cited piece of work is a WIP on Confucius Institute closures that was part of a random intellectual side quest I took. 000
Dr. MHM @mollyhm.bsky.social · 09/09/2026 ED recognition confers gatekeeping authority for certain federal funding programs including Title IV student aid. Journalists should know better than anybody that words matter and how you say things matter. And yet multiple news outlets continue to get this wrong. 000
Dr. MHM @mollyhm.bsky.social · 09/09/2026@politico.com reporting: "...preserve its ability to accredit law schools...recommended ending the association's authority to oversee law school programs..." Incorrect. Once again and louder for the people in the back: ED recognition does not confer authority or ability to accredit. 100
Dr. MHM @mollyhm.bsky.social · 02/09/2026One last thing. As far as I know, the Department of Energy (DOE) doesn't recognize accreditors 010
Dr. MHM @mollyhm.bsky.social · 02/09/2026Language matters. Words matter. How you talk about the issue of ED recognition and what it means matters. Folks out here talking nonsense made me come back on this app for the first time in months. Whew. Thanks for coming to my rant. I shall now disappear back to the void. 010
Dr. MHM @mollyhm.bsky.social · 02/09/2026People keeping saying "Oh! ABA won't be able to accredit any more. ED is proposing taking away their authority to accredit!" No. If they lose recognition, they lose their ability to serve as a Title IV gatekeeper, and in some states, their ability to serve as a sole institutional accreditor. 110
Dr. MHM @mollyhm.bsky.social · 02/09/2026There are many programmatic accreditors that do not have ED recognition and reliably serve as the respective accreditor for their field. Institutional less so because a lot of state regs give nod to ED recognition in their state authorization requirements. But that's a different issue. 100
Dr. MHM @mollyhm.bsky.social · 02/09/2026Everybody to repeat after me. ED recognition does not grant *authority* to accredit. ED recognition is related to gatekeeping for certain federal programs. One does not need ED recognition to serve as an accreditor. One needs ED recognition to provide access to federal programs like Title IV 182

Dr. MHM @mollyhm.bsky.social · 20/05/2026In the grand scheme of the dumpster fire that we find ourselves, it’s really a small thing, but people who conflate SARA and NC-SARA then proceed to use the wrong one for the given situation get a hard side-eye from me. They aren’t the same. Words matter. It’s really not hard. 010

Dr. MHM @mollyhm.bsky.social · 23/04/2026Everybody keeps talking about how KTI needs accreditation, but everybody is failing to mention that they also need state authorization in every state where they will have a student. Dr. MHM @mollyhm.bsky.social · 24/03/2026Defending the seating arrangement that’s been implemented the last 2 meetings as “transparency” is a choice. The published roster of members clearly states how they were appointed. A seating chart isn’t necessary for the public to know who was appointed by which party. 010
