Director Emerson says timeline and process originally established should be followed. My response is that every moment that rushed school closures has hung out there was a moment too long. Distrust and anxiety have been building nonstop for parents, educators, staff, and students alike.

Dir Ellison objects to adding the resolution to the agenda b/c it hasn't yet been discussed. Dir Callahan counters that the point of adding it to the agenda is for discussion. Then audio/tech issues interrupted the proceedings, which are now in a temporary recess.

Director Norvell expressed frustration that directors announced the resolution via an email quickly followed by the announcement in the press. "Not moving forward as a board" + concerns about Open Meeting laws.

Okay, so this has been an emotional start to the meeting. Chair Beachy says he will not put forward any resolution to vote on school closures for 2027/28. Director El-Amin states she feels blindsided by the sudden change. That Chair Beachy did not leave fair ground for others.

Great news! Superintendent Sales-Adams is recommending against school closures at this time. And is moving forward with other elements of the plan to increase enrollment.

Directors El-Amin and Ellison expressed general support for the presented Transformation plan, though El-Amin noted 2 months is too little time for community feedback. Notably, Ellison is the only board member remaining from the CDD era (voted in favor of CDD in May 2020).

Enrollment update from MPS. MPS has attracted 60% of Kindergarteners in MPS versus the 45% widely reported per demographic analysis that did not take into account families moving out of MPLS before their kids reached kindergarten age.

More students expected in South Minneapolis based on demographics, which tracks anecdotally with Kindergarten and 1st grade classes added to elementary schools including Dowling, Hale and Northrop recently.

MPS is starting with each high school and framing pathways to optimally sized schools. They’ve framed the conversation in terms of optimally sized schools having enough income from enrollment to fund the school.

At MN Senate gallery. @zaynabmmohamed.bsky.social’s bill was introduced, a large group of kids Fletcher and Harper’s age filed in, on a field trip. My instinct was to protect them from hearing about the Annunciation shooting and the danger to their lives. But they know this better than anyone
