A few months ago I got to design the staff t-shirt for The Hobbit x MTG! I relished painting some of the pivotal characters and elements of the story. The stylization is inspired by Tolkien's own paintings, and I wanted it to look as though Bilbo had drawn these things in his book.

A stylized collection of images from J. R. R. Tolkien's The Hobbit. Featuring characters Smaug, Bilbo, Beorn, and Gollum, and artifacts like the One Ring, Thorin's Key, the Arkenstone, and Sting.

My roughs for this. We lost Baby Thought SpongeBob along the way.

Three rough storyboard panels (graphite on yellow post-it)

PANELS 1 & 2: Screaming SpongeBobs run through while papers fly.
PANEL 3: Same, but with Baby Thought SpongeBob cries, unnoticed.

They have an orange buffoon, we have a Pope...

"In this era of artificial intelligence, it is becoming urgent to distinguish human art from what machines produce. There is an ontological difference, even before an aesthetic one, between art and what a machine can generate through statistical calculation based on millions of images created by others. Algorithms lack the spark of humanity. For this reason, the Church wishes to renew an alliance with artists and cultural institutions to safeguard our humanity."

Started rewatching the Russian Hobbit last night before bed, but began feeling sleepy halfway through the unexpected party; will finish tonight or whenever convenient. So far, I’m enjoying it a lot more this time around. It’s equal parts cozy, fun, absurd, and downright hilarious.

I did another version where Bilbo has a single strand of white hair à la his MtG design. Personally not too fond of it; still trying to see if I can make it work for my own design.

A colored illustration of Bilbo Baggins turning invisible thanks to the One Ring. He is holding a ring of keys.

This is identical to the first illustration, except that Bilbo has a single strand of white hair.

#Tolkientober Day 2: Luck Bilbo the Luckwearer! I knew there was only one way to approach this prompt, and that was to redraw the Bilbo, Luckwearer card from the MtG x Hobbit set with my own Bilbo design!

As my mother would like to say regarding these kinds of things, “take the good, and leave behind the bad.” At the end of the day, it’s our story; so let’s just do our best to make it a good one, eh? (That’s a Doctor Who ref.)

I Sit Beside the Fire and Think is my favorite poem by Tolkien about "journey's end". As the aging Bilbo sang it in Rivendell, he gave it a contemplative air; recalling past events in sorrow while anticipating returning loved ones. Love the use of seasons to mark passing times. #TolkienTrewsday

I Sit Beside the Fire and Think: a poem by J.R.R. Tolkien

I sit beside the fire and think
of all that I have seen
of meadow-flowers and butterflies
in summers that have been;

Of yellow leaves and gossamer
in autumns that there were,
with morning mist and silver sun
and wind upon my hair.

I sit beside the fire and think
of how the world will be
when winter comes without a spring
that I shall ever see.

For still there are so many things
that I have never seen:
in every wood in every spring
there is a different green.

I sit beside the fire and think
of people long ago
and people who will see a world
that I shall never know.

But all the while I sit and think
of times there were before,
I listen for returning feet
and voices at the door.

And hey, if people can justify Peter Jackson’s exclusion of Tom Bombadil from the LotR trilogy, then I sure as hell can make a case to cut out Beorn from a one or two-movie fancut of The Hobbit.

110

Derek Barrantes @molluskshell.bsky.social · 29/09/2026

Case in point, the Rankin Bass Hobbit movie cut out Beorn, yet it’s generally considered as arguably the most faithful screen adaptation of The Hobbit by many.

111

Derek Barrantes @molluskshell.bsky.social · 29/09/2026

And yes, while Beorn does help turn the tide in the Battle of the Five Armies, you could probably reframe it to make it seem like the armies of men, elves, and dwarves win without Beorn’s presence.

110

Derek Barrantes @molluskshell.bsky.social · 29/09/2026

The Queer Lodgings chapter is one of my personal favorites in the book, but honestly, if we’re really gonna look at the story as a whole, Beorn doesn’t really add much to the narrative other than provide food and shelter for the Company halfway through the journey.

110

Derek Barrantes @molluskshell.bsky.social · 29/09/2026

A Tolkien hot take on this #TolkienTrewsday: If I were to do a one-film cut of The Hobbit trilogy like many others have done, I’d cut out Beorn.
