Divers, East River, 1948 by Arthur Leipzig
Arthur Leipzig was a Brooklyn–born photographer whose work focused on everyday life in the city during the 1930s–50s. He was a member of the influential Photo League. This image captures a moment of play set against the city’s infrastructure, reflecting how young New Yorkers claimed the river’s edge as a space of freedom within the modern city.

“The presence of the photographer changes the atmosphere the moment the subject becomes aware of the camera... What I learned was not technique, but that if the photographer cares about the people before the lens and is compassionate, much is given. It is the photographer, not the camera, that is the instrument.” — Eve Arnold, from The Unretouched Woman. Knopf, 1976

Laughter in the dark: Flann O’Brien, died on the 1st of April 1966. (Letter to William Saroyan about The Third Policeman)
If it's ever published I'll send you a copy. I envy you the way you write just what you want to and like it when it's finished. I can never seem to get anything just right. Nevertheless, I think the idea of a man being dead all the time is pretty new. When you are writing about the world of the dead – and the damned – where none of the rules and laws (not even the Law of Gravity) holds good, there is any amount of scope for back-chat and funny cracks.

Gustave Dore's drawing (1882) was made for Edgar Allan Poe's narrative poem, 'The Raven.' It depicts the narrator opening his chamber door to a mysterious tapping, as described in the poem: 'I opened wide the door; Darkness there and nothing more.'
