Night in the Crieff Hydro for our anniversary and wow it is lush. Came for the Turkish baths but the cocktail bar is one of the best-looking bars I've ever seen.

@Brian McCann mate we all pay for your driving, mostly in the money we have to spend on NHS treatments for asthma. Driving in the city makes wee kids' lungs *measurable smaller*. We pay your way.

Checking back on notes I dumped in a doc in 2024
Soon we will be offered “AI agents”, the trade will be we give them access to everything about us (perhaps ‘anonymised’; this will be irrelevant) and they cut through the noise in a fundamentally broken internet. Their recommendations will be real estate just like google search; they will feel like a friend AND mediate connections to our actual friends; they will secretly act for the enemy

The next step, the tech giants hope, will be to have us put on goggles and mediate all of our reality, collect every second of our lives. An AI trained on us, choosing what we see. If, when you look at a restaurant in real life, reviews pop up, there will be no avoiding being influenced by that.

Something that makes me sad, speaking as a disabled cyclist, is there there is no mention of disabled cyclists. English guidance, which ought to be required reading, does mention us www.gov.uk/government/p...
Table 4 – Disabled cyclists: additional user needs and design principles
User need Design principle
Minimal crossfall Safe
Available space accommodates passage of Cycle Design Vehicle as defined in LTN 1/20 (1/2 way) Comfortable
Ramps for cycle track crossing(s) do not cause tipping/loss of balance Comfortable
Routes need to be suitable and appropriate for use by disabled cyclists using a range of types of cycles. Comfortable

Before and after photos of Sauchiehall Street, Glasgow, Scotland.

The before image has 2 lanes of traffic, 2 lanes of parking (except at junctions and bus stops), worn pavements, and no vegetation.

The after photo has 2 lanes of traffic, a bidirectional cycle lane, a row of trees, and modernised pavements. Parking is only allowed in specific bays and reduces the road width when occupied.

For a while after the launch of Voi rental bikes, "nobody cycles in glasgow" died out on social media. It's back with a vengeance but angrier than before. Partly there is an effort to rile them up, but I also suspect a denial-backlash from seeing all the bikes whizzing everywhere in town.
What makes cycling routes better ? Ehh cyclists using them the 4 or 5 which do. What makes a cycling route better ? What makes a road using user better ? Less cycling routes as their is more road using than cyclists YOUR LITTLE JOINT TO AMSTERDAM OR WEREVER WHICH WAS PAID BY THE CAR TAX DIDN'T ACHIEVE ANYTHING WE DON'T HAVE THEIR CULTURE OR ATMOSPHERE WERE THEY RECIVE MANY MONTHS OF SUN APPARENTLY YOU BROUGHT THIS IDDEA BACK TO A CULTURE WHICH HAS AROUND BRITAIN APROXIMETLY 3 TO 4 WEEKS ACCROSS THE BRITISH ISLAND OF HOT WEATHER ?????? Case in point. This person says they spent $420k porting a compiler from Go to Rust. They haven't read the code, haven't proved it is correct, and don't intend to maintain it. That's life changing money. That's a whole house. They did it just to brag that they could pay for this to happen.

OpenAI Releases the Final Ten Minutes of 500 Previously
Unreleased Films, Ushering in a New Era of Movie Watching

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

SAN FRANCISCO — OpenAI today announced Endings-500, a public GitHub repository containing the final ten minutes of 500 feature films that have never been released, screened, or watched by any human being. Each ending has been formally verified in LeanBack, OpenAI's automated ending-verification system, which confirms that every film does, in fact, end.

For decades, these 500 films have stood among the most stubborn open problems in cinema. Studios, critics, and audiences have long wondered how they turn out. As of today, that question has been definitively answered 500 times, by a system that has also definitively not explained any of the answers.

I'm working on something a bit similar for webapps. Again for my own use. Instead of an agent owned by Mr Zuckerberg, a Linux VPS where I can spin up any agents I want and get *them* to build any webapps I want. Early stage screenshot - for now it just shows the agents and gives you terminal access.

My response to pro-omarchy trolling
This is so boring. Untold thousands build open source community. Communities have values about how we treat each other and work together. Assorted rich Californian men hate having to treat other people well, throw their money around. Guys like you show up to gloat about how you don't live in community and everyone who does sucks. Played like a round of golf and you think you're winning.

When you realise how hollow it all is, community will still be available for you. But you will be required to treat other people well to be part of it.

Trying to learn about the rats is excruciating. This is barely an argument. It is unevidenced. It doesn't engage with the literature on the computability of cognition. Nothing here supports the claim about how many types of minds are possible. The only aim is to have the reader disbelieve themselves
Size of mind design space

The space of possible minds is enormous, and all human beings occupy a relatively tiny volume of it - we all have a cerebral cortex, cerebellum, thalamus, and so on. The sense that AIs are a particular kind of alien mind that 'will' want some particular things is an undermined intuition. "AI" really refers to the entire design space of possibilities outside the human. Somewhere in that vast space are possible minds with almost any kind of goal. For any thought you have about why a mind in that space ought to work one way, there's a different possible mind that works differently.

This is an exceptionally generic sort of argument that could apply equally well to any property P of a mind, but is still weighty even so: If we consider a space of minds a million bits wide, then any argument of the form "Some mind has property P" has 21,000,000 chances to be true and any argument of the form "No mind has property P" has 21,000,000 chances to be false.

Brother in law is trans FtM and presents fully as a man. He’s now facing an impossible situation at work with his employer telling him that due to recent legislation he must use the toilet of his birth gender. BUT several female colleagues have raised a grievance about him using their gendered toilet.

His employer has told him that he cannot use the toilet while he is at work until they sort it out and cannot give him a timeframe to do so. They don’t have disabled separate toilets.

In the mean time one of his female colleagues has accused him of sexual harassment because he was used their gendered toilet. His menstrual cycle meant he needed to use the toilet.

He’s been with the employer for just over 5 years but only in this location for 18 months. The location is mainly male with just a handful of females, and his workshop only has male toilets.

I do not know how to support him and as he’s not in a union there is no one to turn too right now.

Interesting! Anthropic v recently suggested this prompt for fable, seems relevant
Mannered prose substitutes metaphor and flourish for direct statement. Instead of "a parameter worth varying," the mannered writer produces "a dial worth turning." Instead of "this point still matters," they write "this point earns its keep." The phrases exist to display the writer, not to convey the idea, and readers can tell. That is why mannered prose irritates: it makes the reader work harder so the writer can perform. It is also imprecise. Metaphors drag in connotations the writer did not choose and cannot control. The fix is to say what you mean. When a literal phrase is available, use it.
