“...” Kaveh looks very much like he’s debating fleeing from the kitchen, and Al-Haitham’s eyes narrow, a silent warning that Kaveh cannot outrun an insomniac undergraduate student and a woman who comes up to his armpit, and thus he doesn’t have a snowball’s chance in Natlan of outrunning Al-Haitham.

“You have to promise not to laugh at me,” Kaveh starts, though the way his eyes stray away from Al-Haitham’s face seems to imply he’s worried about a much harsher punishment. “And–and before anything else, if you’re not comfortable with me being here during rut, I–I’ll get a hotel, I’ll find somewhere, it’s your house–”

“Don’t be ridiculous. With what mora? Do not remove yourself from our home over problems you’ve imagined yourself, without even telling me what is going on.”

Something in Kaveh’s face shifts at the words ‘our home’, something Al-Haitham can’t quite put a name to. But whatever it is, it is beautiful, soft and aching as he finally makes eye contact with Al-Haitham. The kitchen seems to smell of summer rain, their flowers no less present but somehow no longer discordant and overwhelming, as everything settles together. Al-Haitham can no longer discern the individual scents that make up the layers as they weave through one another, becoming one scent, singular.

Chapter 10
The Forest Rangers stopped Siraj at the very edge of Ghandarva Ville, and that is where Kaveh finds him, as fast as his legs can take him. He’s not sure how it is faster than Al-Haitham or Tighnari–perhaps it is the magic still wild in his body, or perhaps he’s just used to the adrenaline, the burn of fear. He doesn’t think much about it, he can’t, not with the ugly way his stomach twists and his heart and magic seem to want to claw out of his chest.

It’s just as much fury as it is fear, for now. Siraj may well tip the balance, and Kaveh can’t tell in which direction until he finds him.

Kaveh cannot say out loud that Collei will likely survive the attempt if it fails. He cannot even acknowledge the fact that his mother might not survive a sloppy success.

Unfortunately for Al-Haitham, he’s recently come into possession of a group of people willing to push past that second point, and even more unfortunately, he’s found that letting his guard down is rather pleasant, when it involves people who do not see his uniqueness as a flaw to be corrected. It is unfortunate, because with the boon of true companionship comes the truly unpleasant ordeal of being known.

Maybe half a dozen people in Teyvat have learned enough about Al-Haitham to confidently say that the third fact anyone learns about him is that he is deeply, obviously, hopelessly in love with Kaveh. The reviews have come in and they agree that this should, in fact, be promoted to the most obvious thing about Al-Haitham, as though he should wear a sign around his neck that proclaims that he has been in love with his best friend since they were in school for all the world to see.

(“Though really, I think anyone with eyes in their head to read wouldn’t actually need the sign,” Cyno comments over the deck he is shuffling despite the games that night having been long finished.

Al-Haitham quite heroically does not pour the rest of his beer down Cyno’s chest. The beer is awful, but he paid for it, and he’ll finish it, thank you.)

wip...friday hello yes I've been sick anyway here's kaveh being an utter disaster.

“Nilou wouldn’t have remarked on it either, as she’s much the same as you–and we did not expect you to grow so powerful so quickly. Naturally, you already were, and I am astonished by your sheer luck that it has gone undetected all this time–”

“What the hell are you talking about?”

“It is my grandmother you dream of, Kaveh,” Al-Haitham shifts, crawling across the bed to loom over Kaveh, eyes still uncannily and unnaturally bright. “It is one thing to dream of your familiar’s memories–this is expected, and the only way most Akademiya scholars ever dream after childhood. It is entirely another thing to slip into the dreams of others, and have them as your own.”

Kaveh swallows, throat too dry to ask the million-and-one questions crowding his tongue, arrested by the shimmering heat in Al-Haitham’s eyes. It might resemble anger, but no, it is an entirely different sort of heat Kaveh feels in his bones, caught by that inhuman shimmer. He cannot even ask himself when he became so weak to the fire of Al-Haitham’s eyes, because the answer is roughly thirty seconds after the first time he looked into them.

It is inconsiderate and terribly rude for Al-Haitham to be a creature of such unquestionable beauty, given how little the pretentious newt has ever cared for aesthetics.

oh, man. it's actually this one from my novel right now which totally counts ok.

It was commonly held wisdom that one's life and regrets flashed before their eyes as they died, but Ranell couldn't see anything, and the only thing he regretted was that his horse had fallen down the cliff with him. It had taken all his remaining strength to crawl to it and cut it's throat, a swift end for a creature that didn't deserve the suffering of a long, drawn-out death on the icy sides of the mountain, but he had nothing left in him afterwards. He lay there half-draped over the cooling body of his horse, dimly aware both his legs were broken, and from the sharp pain when he inhaled, probably one of his ribs.

So much for Ranell Aydin, youngest Captain of the Ironheart Hunters in the history of the duchy. None of that had helped him, out on the cold slopes of Snowcairn, nor had it really ever been of much comfort to him. Perhaps if he'd had any pride in the work, he might have found a sense of purpose in it that could have lifted his spirits and lessened his grief. Perhaps, if he had not been dismissive of the position and so focused only on his own pain, he'd have made true comrades among the other Hunters, and they'd have been less wary of an upstart orphan rising to command so swiftly.

Perhaps, if they had not been so wary of him, he would not have been alone on this mountainside with his brother's murderer, and not thus ridden right into a trap.
