As someone who did maths, I found this type of person very early - they were the ones going WHY DO I NEED TO LEARN TRIGONOMETRY TO FIT A PIPE. Sir, you're being taught how to reason in a logic-based language, not getting ready for the similar triangle factory.

This is the second one I've seen just today, the other being calling the Taoiseach the Irish equivalent of President instead of Prime Minister (Uachtarán na hÉireann is the equivalent title to President of Ireland)

All the papers are full of polling about how many people, including Conservative voters, are now in favour of reversing the single most impactful Conservative policy of the past 20 years. The Tories have responded with "If elected, we'll do it again." Keminaissance incoming

The bill has been opened to feedback. Rather than dooming about the proposal, you can tell them exactly how you feel about the act here. ec.europa.eu/info/law/bet... With how much of an uphill battle Chat Control is having, you should never assume it's worthless to fight these draconian bills.

Morally, intellectually, artistically, and idealogically repugnant. Incoherent. Unsettling. More than a bit cracked. Ladies and gentleman, Kemi Badenoch.

One of the side effects of heavily subsidised AI models being around is that ideas like this don't get caught somewhere in between the person who wants it and the person who would actually have to pay a lot of the party's money to have it exist

"One of the darkest movies ever made" There is no way on earth that Avengers: Doomsday even cracks the top 1000. Every single character could die along with all the children in the cast and it would not crack the top 1000.

My spouse has held onto it longer than I have on my behalf, which then leads to saying something like "look Maisie, this shop hates your freedoms too" and I'm sure somewhat confusing the staff who may not have been born in time for that Bush speech

At some point I started joking "because they hate our freedoms" in response to any minor inconvenience (for example my local spar carrying every flavour of crisp except my favourite), and the further we get away from second gulf war American jingoism, the less funny it gets Yet still, it beckons

There's a lot to be said for something that reminds you of the times when everything didn't just kept getting worse all the time. The Avengers franchise remembers when the Windows operating system functioned, we didn't have a drought, nobody had heard of chatgpt, and the strait of hormuz was open.

In fairness, the last big avengers film came out before *gestures at the state of the world*, and so there very well might be an element of "I want to feel the way I did when I watched avengers films, maybe this will do that"

given a quaternion rotation q, q² doubles the rotation √q halves the rotation qˣ scales the rotation by x as a rule of thumb - whatever operator you would use with vectors, like, say, addition, elevate it to the higher order operator (multiplication) to do the same thing on a quaternion
a table comparing vector operations to quaternion operations side by side, highlighting the similarities. the quaternion variants look almost identical, except they use the next higher order operator in each expression. ie: multiplication instead of addition. exponentiation instead of multiplication, etc.

What a dark day when I agree with a post that is any way positive about Priti Patel... The Home Office is in such a grim state.

Oh, I'm not defending her as a home secretary whatsoever, just acknowledging that her family wouldn't have been impacted by draconian immigration rules in the same way as Mahmood, Braverman, Patel.

It has upsides and downsides, like any system does, but it does work rather well to keep out extremist parties. The counterpoint to that is that political change tends to be quite slow and gradual.

I mean there's an app for that if you want to just search for the name of the food and get a number that has nothing to do with the instance of the food in front of you because it's a different serving of a different recipe... It's called MyFitnessPal. Doesn't feel revolutionary lol

It becomes increasingly distracting that she's still getting worked up about haters and singing about relationships from a teenage (at best) perspective as she gets into her mid 30s. I keep getting older and Taylor Swift stays (mentally) the same age.

I used to have a restrictive eating disorder (recovered now, thankfully), and as a result am violently aware of where multiple hundreds of calories can sneak in without anyone without scientific instruments being able to tell at the point of eating. Not helpful. (+ LLMs are often wrong anyways)

Especially as it's just a statistical model, so it doesn't even really "think" about the question.. just gives a response that it thinks is statistically relevant to the question based on its data set. It very well might just be picking a fairly random number that's sort of calorie sized.

Not even sure that's possible full stop without a scale and the entire recipe used to cook the food... How could it guess from a photo how much cooking oil was used for example. Could be 100s of kcals difference.

As well as more care workers freeing up local people to work their highly paying jobs or more hours because they don't have to be spent caring. I quit a very highly paying job to care full time for an elderly family member, because there were just no local provisions available.

There's also the extra money businesses make by growing, the £1k per year in health surcharge immigrants have to pay, the thousands in visa fees per visa, the money pushed through the university system via astronomical student fees, etc.

It is indeed... And then you pay for the NHS again through general taxation... And then the government changes the rules on you retrospectively because you don't contribute enough. Wonderful system.

I've lost count of the number of times Starmer, Mahmood, Streeting, Phillipson, etc basically said some catchphrase like "making things fairer for everyone" or "listening to the British people" that makes it *implicitly obvious* that they do not include me or anyone like me in "everyone" or "people"

On more than just that issue as well. There's a lot of "we're not bad people, we just tactically decided to do bad things! That means it's okay, right?" And also "We're a government on the people's* side!" *People meaning white UK-born manual labourers** in the red wall and nobody else

Also I agree the HO changes people but in this case she was a nasty authoritarian piece of work long before she was put in the home office, and will be after she leaves it. What a miserable person.

It wasn't until I started watching the HASC and lords home committee hearings that I realised how frustrated they are by their complete lack of ability to check her. I'm not aware of any other minister that effectively has the power to legislate by dictat. Someone has to grasp the nettle here.

Mairéad "Maisie" Ó Dorchaidhe @modorchaidhe.bsky.social · 26/09/2026
At this point we need an overhaul of the powers of the home secretary. It should not be possible for her to unilaterally ruin the lives of millions with a stroke of the pen without parliamentary consent.

I am considering leaving with my British spouse and British child just because I don't want to contribute to a country that would do this, and we can easily go elsewhere. We're top rate taxpayers.

Governments tend to forget that their authority only reaches so far and people who are desperate to stay will try every avenue available before giving up. Despite Mahmood's best efforts there are still human rights laws in this country.

Mairéad "Maisie" Ó Dorchaidhe @modorchaidhe.bsky.social · 26/09/2026
Were it to come to pass I would expect a lot of private life applications, some article 8 judgements, and a lot of overstaying mixed in with people leaving after being forced off their route. Along with panic switches to student, asylum claims, panic switches to family route... Etc.

Mairéad "Maisie" Ó Dorchaidhe @modorchaidhe.bsky.social · 26/09/2026
And I'm still waiting for the commentariat to notice the impacts on spouses and parents of citizens, ancestry visa holders, Hong Kong BNO visa holders, etc because it's been almost entirely ignored.

I strongly feel that as drafted the earned settlement proposals would filter for the poorest, most desperate, and least able to migrate elsewhere people who would either stay with limited leave or overstay, while causing an exodus of basically every other cohort.

Also punishes the dependents of even the highest income workers just for the sake of it... A group of people who absolutely can just leave to another similar country if mistreated. The entire policy is wrongheaded and incoherent. Mean-spirited, poorly drafted, full of edge cases, and harmful
