How fascism always works. Don't think for a second 30p Lee wouldn't delight in applying literal thumbscrews to the elites (ie anyone who looked down on him for being a thick, ignorant thug) come the revolution, or in their case winning an outright majority and passing an enabling act

On 8 January the Bolsheviks, having protested bitterly against Kerensky's reintroduction of capital punishment in the summer, in- sisted on the death penalty for counter-revolutionary agitators and any bourgeois who resisted or avoided compulsory labour. Grounds for execution soon included flyposting, the non-payment of taxes, break- ing the curfew, and traders resisting arrest. The Bolshevik tactic was to claim that proletarian anger was so intense that they could not resist the demands for 'popular justice'.

The following month, Lenin granted the Cheka the right to torture and kill, without trial or any judicial supervision. With a mountain of caseloads, it became quicker and easier for Chekists to condemn each prisoner to death rather than investigate. Long working hours, how- ever, did not deter applicants attracted by the unlimited power to torture and kill. Within two years Dzerzhinsky had 20,000 men and women under his command.

Plea to stop reporting shit Trump says as news No. 1389876 in a series. FFS Guardian, just say "AI", who fucking cares what Trump says, he's a fucking imbecile

of Trump's meeting with Xi "He said the current visit would include discussion over security, technology and Al - which he called "super intelligence", a term he introduced in his speech to the United Nations general assembly on Tuesday."

GIving Carly Rae Jepsen ne double album a listen A vaguely concept double album of slick, imaginative, progressive pop, what's not to like. She's like a reverse Phil Collins.

Album cover of Carly Rae Jepsen's new release "Day and Night".
It features Carly, dressed in a long leather coat leaning on a round table outside a bistro.

My favourite fungi are back! In other news a couple of firsts for the garden, we've never had a second crop of the daisies before and the vine excelled itself this year with bushes of sweet, juicy grapes...in Ireland. We really did break the planet

Isn't AI already competing with us for resources? It doesn't require a new species, unless we consider the hedge fund and tech bro oligarchs post human.

I love this time of year, there's a sort of grandiose yet pitiful finsl burst of life before it all fades away for the next 7 or 8 months

We recently had a round of interviews where candidates were using some sort of AI software to listen to our questions and were reading out the generated reponse text. Needless to say none of them made it past the 10 minute mark. I'll now be dropping random words in questions to smoke it out sooner.

Much as i laud Carney for seeking closer ties with the EU, much like brexiteers hoping closer US relations will compensate EU frictions, geographical gravity is of course everything. They are stuck with the US for good or ill. Although in Canada's case the brexit sovereignty canard is seemingly real

Max Lury, No Ghosts. Debut novel, excellent writing, compelling, wonderful liminal weirdness that is probably cosmic horror, left beautifully uncertain but is definitely about grief, for lost friends and our own (in Britain often extended) youth.

When the boys get nostalgic about their childhood the first words they'll reach for will definitely be "hay bails"

Roo, sat atop a hay bail, contemplating the deep beauty and the strange nature of existence....or who would win a fight, Dr Manhatten or the Hulk...but definitely the nature and existence thing....

And we are almost there. Just the paths to go.

There will be a torii gate here at some point in the future, framed by the water on the left and the bamboo forest on the right

From the entrance to the field, the bamboo grove will look a bit less sorry for itself when they haven't been stuck in pots for 4 months

My Japanese forest spirit looks on. The bridge is temporary, a curving red japanese bridge will appear some time in the future, but i think this one I'd rather nice

Looking up at the house from the lowest point ofnthe garden

The most expensive bit of the garden, more than the pond, the bridge, the pots, the plants and the design combined, has been managing the goddamn endless water that plonks itself on top of of us for 8 months of the year

Another picture of the garden landscaping, this time trenches dug and pipes laid down to divert all the rainfall and runoff from the fields around the pond to the outlet channel under the road
