I’m genuinely curious, what do you think of the ELIZA chatbot. I think it would be patently absurd to call it conscious but, at the time, it met the criteria you’ve set (“well it kinda seems like they’re thinking”) for a LOT of people.

The user below is either illiterate, selfish or some combo of both. NHJ chose the school for a perfectly reasonable and noble end. At no point does she even mention wanting to 'make a statement' or 'virtue signal'.
