When they get back in power, Democrats need to go all-in on higher education. We need a campaign of reinvestment in public universities across the country that makes the Morrill Land-Grant Act look like nothing by comparison *and* a GI Bill of Rights-style program of tuition grants.

This is quite an anecdote about how our current Secretary of Education got the job. www.politico.com/news/magazin...
Linda McMahon was in her living room late one night, shortly after Trump won his second election, when her phone rang. Trump wanted to know if the woman who had led the Small Business Administration in his first term — and had been CEO of World Wrestling Entertainment before that — wanted to be his secretary of Education.

“Mr. President,” McMahon recalled telling him, “you know that I have not been in the world of education.”

“Well, you did graduate from college, didn’t you?” he responded, according to McMahon’s recollection.

Trump wasn’t looking for someone with education credentials. What he wanted instead was another business leader that would deliver a “return on investment” in the Department of Education. He also said her goal would be to put herself “out of a job” with the eventual downsizing of the department, she recalled.

“That’s not necessarily how I would expect to be courted,” she chuckled before accepting his request. McMahon would be the only one of two members from Trump’s first Cabinet — along with budget director Russ Vought — to be invited back for the second.

My issue is that the gif below seems to exemplify what the McMahon DOE is hopes to do (and IS doing) to anyone who dares dream of something more than operating a forklift. /2

Plenty to reflect about re: the Arday affair, but I'm going to repeat this one thing. The playbook the right used here is effective even though it's not especially sophisticated, as it relies on the audience to do the dirty work. I've been calling it "Trojan horse propaganda", let's go with that. 1/

Internationalism is a powerful way for us to sustain and advance human understanding, of course. International cooperation, collaboration, and learning are also a remedy for the global turn towards fascism (which is why meaningful funding/participation are not encouraged or supported by many 😏). /4

US universities are happy to take international students’ tuition/fees; they need to ensure that this funding not only moves away from financial extraction, but translates into more meaningful global education collaboration. /3

My takeaways so far: US higher education must do more to support students and faculty participation in international research societies generally, but also prioritize internationalism as a foundational value more specifically. /2
