I always enlist at least a few teen boys of various backgrounds as beta readers for my YA manuscripts, and on my last one, a few of them told me that the romance subplot was their favorite part. It made me giddy that they said it so freely and normally

I have a few WIPs (more YA fanged vikings! YA Dark Souls!) but I'm stoked for this YA Mystery Tyler KNOWS his girlfriend was with him during the boat accident, but now he can't remember her name & no one seems to know she even existed—except for the girl who works at the weird puppet park #DVParty

I appreciate your perspective! Alas, I think it could be a little awkward in this story for him to say his own name right off the bat. When I write/read in 1st person, I generally prefer to set the scene a bit first and let the rest of chapter one gradually showcase the narrator's voice/character

100% agree that this is part of the issue!! But my (sadly unsuccessful) goal with this question was to kinda dive deeper into the actual publishing side of it all. Bc it is also true that a lot of boys aren't seeing themselves in YA, and I want to better understand why those decisions are being made

That first point is where things get a little chicken-and-egg, I think! When I was a literacy tutor, I mostly worked with boys who had aged out of MG but really struggled to find home in YA So I have to wonder if one of the reasons teen boys read less is because we *give* them less

Making the food from my books because I feel like it! This first one is from my Norse-inspired Fantasy world: Sweet Bread with Cheese Brioche with diced apples, raisins, cinnamon, cardamom, and mace, served with whipped honey ricotta🍽️

And, in my humble opinion, this is one thing contributing to the teen reading decline. We made a YA market that chases adult readers/adult money instead of accepting that catering to actual teens probably won't rake in the uber bucks (with the long-term gain of fostering future adult readers)

I'm in the same boat. My best guess for my aversion is that the characters are often put in very specific gender/behavioral boxes that feel restrictive. I've also felt like some plots/worlds I've read were just written to hit specific tropes or dialogue, which really made them feel... inauthentic?
