BigDataLDN off to a banger start! Standing room only for my talk on the evolution of semantic layers and why they matter for context, governance, and costs in the age of agents! #bigdataldn

Great evening out with the Wake Dems. @ross.house.gov was on fire with her remarks and generously took town hall questions. Lot of good energy in the room going into the midterms.

Excited to be headed to #BigDataLDN next month and talking about semantic layer goodness. Come for the talk and swing by the Coginiti booth to chat all things data, semantics, and AI. Tickets are free, so no reason not to attend if you're in the London area. www.bigdataldn.com/en-gb/regist...

A career in data takes more than learning the right tools. I’m talking with Aaron Wilkerson of Carhartt next Tuesday about what actually gets you to the next level: technical skills, business impact, leadership, career choices, and what AI changes. riverside.com/webinar/regi...

Had the chance to meet @paulbarringer.com running to be North Carolina's 13th district representative. He's an a real Eagle Scout, AT trail hiker, grew up and lives on a farm, and most importantly understands the needs of North Carolina voters. Working for change in the midterm elections!

Coginiti 26.6 is out and you can now call an LLM directly inside CoginitiScript. New llm block type, sits next to your SQL. Write a prompt, declare a typed schema, get structured rows back, then query them downstream like any other table. The model's a pipeline step now, not a bolt-on.

finance ARR ≠ sales ARR ≠ marketing ARR none of them are wrong. they're all "correct" against three different definitions. now ask an AI agent for revenue and watch it pick a fourth.

On my way to Google Next in Vegas ✈️ Looking forward to cutting through the AI noise and getting a clearer view of what’s actually shipping vs. what’s still slideware. If you’re there, say hi.

The NEW Designing Data-Intensive Applications dropped on my desk this morning and at 600+ pages it landed with a thud! If you work in data, this book definitely belongs on your shelf. It's undoubtedly one of the most, if not the most, important and relevant data systems book you could read.

The organizations that close that gap now are the ones that will actually get value from AI and not just demos. Sharing the confidence-reality chart above because it's a reflection that every major research firm has confirmed this gap in readiness. If that gap looks familiar, let's chat!

Grateful for the chance to speak at the Charlotte SUG this week! The talk opened with a simple observation: we've been telling data and analytics executives to get their data ready for AI for over a decade. Long before LLMs were a household term, the data readiness gap was already the bottleneck.

Headed to Austin for a couple of days of mgmt meetings and the great Data Day Texas conference! Looking forward to connecting with data folks irl, but first I have to compress 4hrs of slides into a digestible 30min talk. #DDTX2026

Charted the private market funding for all three analytic data platforms, which makes DBRX look like hoarders by comparison. SNOW's IPO raise of 3.4B on top of their private market funding doesn't even put them close in terms of money on hand.

In software engineering we have blue-green deployments, but in data it's write-audit-publish, or if you've got real data quality problems, audit-write-audit-publish. Both patterns can be implemented as data testing strategies using CoginitiScript. docs.coginiti.co/tutorials/wa...

Son Volt - Trace. Released in 1995, after the breakup of Uncle Tupelo, Trace was a defining album of the alt-country genre.

When my family and colleagues ask why I put effort into hosting our local low-key data happy hour. That’s 713 people we helped connect this year. Hundreds or stories about individual and organizational data struggles and wins. And yeah, hundreds of product discovery discussions too.

The new Gartner report on metadata management just came out, and it’s interesting as much for who made the list as for who didn’t. Coalesce and ServiceNow made the list on the basis of recent acquisitions. Maybe next year we see Atlassian following today's Secoda acquisition.

Lot of fun and learning at our Apache Iceberg meetup last night. Deep dive on MinIO new AIStor, Iceberg native object storage similar to Amazon's S3Tables. @sandonjacobs.bsky.social did a stellar presentation on the Streamhouse! Closed with a speed run of Coginiti's adaptive query capabilities.

Looking forward to being at the GovAI Summit (Oct 27-29, Arlington VA) on behalf of Coginiti! If you’ll be around, stop by our booth and let’s connect in person. And if you’re not at the conference but you'd like to grab a coffee (or whiskey🥃) while I’m in town, send me a message and lets meet up.

Great turnout for our Low-Key data meetup in Raleigh last night. Wonderful catching up with so many regulars and meeting the new people that showed up! Lots of great conversations about people, processes, careers, and the personal highlight for me... meeting someone building ml for chicken sexing!

Spent a few days offline communing with nature and contemplating another trip around the sun. Didn’t spend a minute thinking about data, sql, open table formats, snow vs dbrx, etc. Regular nonsense will commence tomorrow after I’ve deleted all these emails.

I've carried a pocket knife daily since high school, almost always a Spyderco like the one on the left. It's such a habit that when I don't have one clipped to my pocket I feel like I'm missing something. When I travel I clip a Lamy Safari pen in my pocket to fill the spot as a placebo.

I've started a new project this year. Reading authors local to North Carolina who write about people and place. In part this is to give me more of a sense for my new home. (It's not that foreign when you're from KY) Lately reading through David Joy's excellent novels. Next up Taylor Brown & Ron Rash

The last month I've seen a number of hit pieces about Apache Iceberg from database guys that seem really upset about the rise of open table formats. Puzzling since major investment in Iceberg is coming from every major database from DB2 to Snowflake.
