STARTS IN A TAVERN
OZANNA
If Arlo didn't shut his mouth, I was going to climb over the bar, shove my money down his throat, and take the change out of his ass. He was just standing there, chatting away with another customer an infuriatingly easy smile deepening the lines of his aged face while I flailed and failed to get his attention. But it wasn't until the third I'll be with you soon gesture that I hauled myself up on the stool-rung to hurl a copper at him. And that's when my gaze fell upon the tip boxes.
There were four of them, small and wooden, secured to the wall behind the bar, one for each of his regular tavern maids. Including one for his wife, Tabi, who was the cook. Since tips were easily stolen from the tables, it was Arlo's policy to collect them along with payment and place the money in the proper box. And from my elevation, I could see each name painted on the lid above the coin slot.

He sighed and peered at me thought-fully, offering up a sheepish little grin that made his eyes sparkle. "You've bewitched me, Ozanna. When I look at you, I see the afternoon sun in an autumn forest. Feel the warmth of its light on my face and the promise of our life to come-grown from the fertile depths of your eyes, shielded by the fierceness of your spirit, and nourished by the veiled gentleness of your heart." He cradled my face in his hands, resting his forehead against mine, and closed his eyes. "Not a day goes by that I don't recall the scent of your ecstasy, the tender brush of your fingers against my skin ..." He shuddered and nuzzled my nose with his own. "... the taste of my seed on your lips ... I'm possessed by you; haunted by every kiss and lingering glance..."
I tipped my chin and pressed my lips against his, unable to bear more of his words or the intensity of the feelings they stirred in my chest. "I love you," I murmured with a gasp before kissing him again. "I love you I love you I love you.
We clung to each other and savored the moment, my fingers combing through the hair that hung against his cheek while he held me tight.

"No," answered Ozanna. "I have a duty to hinder them and stall for time. It's possible the horses will make it back to your father after a time. Their riderless return could alert him that something's gone wrong. Hindering the highwaymen will give his men a better trail to follow if not provide us an opening for escape. And at the very least, I have to protect you physically."
"Oh, you don't have to worry about that," the princess giggled. "Lhoris won't let them hurt me. I don't think he'd let them hurt you, either, if you just relax. You should have seen his face while he undid your hair. So tender!" Well, it was little wonder Lobikno had warned me off the mercenary. If the girl had noticed through the intensity of her storytelling, it must have been quite a bit more obvious than I realized.

The rest of my time was spent cursing Frank for the rough ride and watching the northern side of the road, but that wasn't a strategic choice by any means. The eastern range was the smallest of the three and still obscured by forest, but after thirty-odd years of longing for a people I never thought I'd meet, my eyes just drifted north when I was idle. Between Doramdir's news of bandits and Norvil's ego, it might finally, actually happen. True, it would be a bloodbath instead of polite conversation over tea, but that's just my luck.
So, with that in mind, and the unease with my current assignment, I couldn't help but feel I was the edge of ... something. Just
probably not a tea party.

Lhoris was going to take my weapons regardless of my reactions, and if he wasn't a lying sack of shit, I could walk away from this intact. I didn't like it, but my body, the last weapon at my disposal, would be as whole as it could be when it was time for action.
Without further resistance on my part, he began the process by digging his fingers into the knotwork of braids at the back of my head. He poked and prodded the hairpins, searching for a weapon that wasn't there-though it was an excellent idea for the future.
Then he worked over the rest of my body with surprising proficiency considering he was doing it one-handed. He didn't linger, fondle, or grope while he calmly tossed away my pocketed arsenal one dagger at a time. In fact, nothing he did made me flinch until the weight of my skirts lifted. My body tensed reflexively, but otherwise I remained still.
He didn't move for a moment either-probably bracing for a donkey kick in the shins-and I held my breath, waiting to see if his talk of consideration was just that.

So, while Eve and Judith handed food to the others, I peered up into the branches of the willow. The wind whispered through the drifting tendrils of its branches, the ends occasionally tickling across my cheek in a gentle caress. It wasn't as though I'd never watched the sun filter through willow leaves before, but, my gods, it had never been so clear. Without a thousand thoughts and visions pulling at my sleeve for attention and interpretation, I could just look at the damn tree! And as I twirled beneath the willow in the mottled sunlight, I realized I might not actually be insane. That maybe every day: could be like this if I learned how to work with the Oracle instead of fighting against it.

"It's time to leave," he explained with a sigh while I blinked up at him. "It appears Rhyfon doesn't like you after all, and since we can't have you colluding with your friends to attack poor Lobikno again, you're stuck with me."
"Why not one of the others?" I asked, though he didn't answer. He just mounted his horse and offered me a quick, rueful smile before extending an arm. Then Lobikno grabbed me at the waist and lifted me to sit in front of his brother. Their ease in picking me up was not only disconcerting but also painful.
"I can climb up here on my own," I snarled at the sullen elf when my feet left the ground.
His fingers dug into my ribs while gravity did its damndest to fight against his strength.
Gasping, I kicked a leg over the horse to speed the process along before I ended up with a broken rib. Lhoris snorted a laugh while he finished pulling me into place.
I glared at him over my shoulder. "If you don't let my feet hit the ground occasionally, my muscles will atrophy." In retrospect, it was a silly complaint, but I didn't really care at that point. I was angry and tired, and felt incredibly helpless. It was that last one that
left me so utter v frustrated.

The maid gasped. "What is it?"
"She's a ... bird-squirrel," Eve answered while giving Emma's feathers an affectionate tickle. The woman gave her a doubtful look.
"From beyond the mountain range," I expanded. "All sorts of strange things up that way. The name just doesn't translate well." I repeated "bird squirrel" in elvish, which seemed to satisfy her curiosity. Then she left to get our drinks.
"I'm sorry," Eve whispered across the table with a wince. "I panicked."
"Nah. You'd be amazed how many things are named like that," I murmured, leaning in over the table. "Half the time they just sound mysterious because the word comes from a different language. It gets even funnier when you realize that half the name comes from another language and it's literally the samr word as the first. Then you feel like a crazy person calling something a bear-bear or crab-crab."

I'd never slept outside the walls of Langan Castle until my bridal journey. The closest I'd come to camping was a tent in my mother's solar. It was the summer before she was killed, right before my magic manifested. I remember laying down on my pillow inside the little tent and peeking out just enough to watch the sunlight turn her hair into gold.
Then she read stories of monsters and heroes from old books until my eyes got heavy.
She'd put the book aside then and lean over to tap her nails on the taut canvas roof so I could doze off to the sound of rain.
But there were no tents when we camped on the side of the road. Or storybooks for silly little princesses. Just a lot of grumbling soldiers and handmaids.
