Here's an interesting trans history in Toronto find! A Toronto Telegram article from August 1970 with trans sex worker Lily St. Clair! Previously a female impersonator, she is described as having bottom surgery 8 months prior to the article. She performed at the Westover Hotel at 212 Dundas St E.

Nah but you're right. The GOPs big tent is about diversity of who to hate, not who belongs. Who belongs is a very narrow sliver - cis straight white Protestant able-bodied neurotypical affluent men and their property. But the Dems keep being told that that's the tent to strive for.

Dems think they can win votes by piling on trans ppl. But all it does is give the transphobes it appeals to more reason to vote GOP while depressing votes from their own party who know trans ppl or are sympathic to minority rights.

Unfortunately no - they seem to have recently stopped manufacturing them, so every place I got one it was the last one they had in inventory. So I got one from a prepper store, one from a marine store. These guys have one, but I haven't used them:

What is still not clear is the sudden reversal. Was there US pressure involved. And what kind of precedent does this set for other organizations that Canada funds? You can’t criticize the US as a condition of support?

There was these guys but then they switched the design for production to use disposable oil canisters that only they would sell. Presumably to create a source of recurring revenue, but it killed the appeal of the product.

I've switched from using kerosene lanterns to these Canadian-made candle-powered LED lamps. The candles are a few cents each and generate power for 4 hours. I just got a second one this past week. I wish though there were lanterns using this tech.

I found a new low for performative diversity and inclusion: everything is AI generated. The DEI/ERG e-mails, articles, trainings - all AI generated. It sanitizes everything into a "let's have fun". There's zero advocacy/push for change. It's a celebration of the status quo.

Computers kept doubling in processing power every eighteen months, as did storage, allowing for new experiences in games. Then around 2007-2008 it stalled. There was a greater leap between 2000 (Deus Ex) and 2004 (Doom 3) than 2008 (GTA 4) and 2026.

Ok so in narcissist speak he's saying that Canada didn't charge the US a lot of tariffs. Which is why he's inventing an excuse he thinks is above scrutiny ("nobody knew about except me"). It's frustrating his lies as transparent as a 5 year old's don't get the backlash they deserve.

The religious right is steadily expanding its definition of what is sexual — and restricting what it deems acceptable in public spaces. Tech companies, in want of less oversight, are taking the hint. The deplatforming that started with sex workers / kink / trans has come for gay bars.

The youth didn't change. The tech did. Permanently Internet-connected computers, esp in ppl's pockets, changed corporate incentives. No more owning, only subscriptions. Weaponizing attention to max ad revenue. Dark patterns. Dynamic pricing. It took a psychological toll. Tragedy of the commons.

I heard that AI companies might be "too big to fail" and rescued with public funds. But AI companies operating hurts a lot of businesses/consumers too. Eg. a $2 memory chip is now $45 because of datacenters. That muddies a rescue. I don't know what will happen, but we'll pay for it either way.

The cost of them doing it too; they're burning through investment cash at an unfathomable pace. When the chickens come home to roost, the entire economy will crash, taking out power companies and so much more with it.

Yeah, it's the kind of naive take when you haven't been on the receiving end of a *strategy* to scapegoat a minority *with known falsehoods*. And for the gullible people who eat up this hate, it incorrectly presumes reason got them there therefore talk can get them back.

A day's wages as "affordable" is wild. Anyways for Ottawa at least, you can get quality meals made from scratch for $20, eg. Beechwood Diner, and quality sandwich shops that are $10 eg. 50 TWO.

The tldr: anti-trans rhetoric only moves conspiracy theorists to act. They outsource opinions to their in-group on Facebook. The in-group for anti-social conspiracy theories is mostly far-right. So copying this rhetoric only pushes them rightward while alienating a base who likely knows trans ppl.

Le Guin’s anarchism and why it’s so great.Adrienne Row-Smith (she/her) is a Queer Black visual specialist based in so-called Ottawa, working across photo and video to create bold, impactful imagery. Rooted in a deep commitment to authenticity and accessibility in media, she co-founded The Grove, which is an interdisciplinary art and community space offering affordable rentals and sliding-scale events. Through both her creative practice and community work, Adrienne aims to build a space and working body that reflects the elements of care, resistance, and belonging, where disenfranchised voices are not only heard but celebrated.Lee Arden is the author of The Politics of Lonely: Why Is Friendship So Hard?, a book that takes friendship out of an individualistic context and argues that we’re struggling with our friendships because we live in the decaying ruins of colonial capitalism. Lee also runs the small press and zine distro Sheer Spite Press and has written lots of zines, including PALS: The Radical Possibilities of Friendship, which formed the basis for this new book.
