Earlier today I came up with a perfect opening sentence for a paper I am writing. I was on the go, and did not write it down. And of course I forgot it. All I remember is that it had an inversion structure, which does not help me much...
A comic strip with four panels, each with the same golden fish. 1st panel: fish smiling, thinking "Oh wow! I got it!". Second panel shows the fish thinking complex mathematical formula and "The meaning of life!" sentence. Third panel is the fish without a thought. Forth panel has the fish with a frustrated face and the thought bubble reads: "Wait. What was I thinking about?".

When in Rome do as the Romans do, so I'm starting the day in Strasbourg with a coffee sans cigarette (but an interesting paper to read instead). Also, presenting a poster (@EASP Gen. Meeting) has its perks: no meddling with the slides, no re-testing the talk to fit in the time limit. Just relaxing.

So, male sexual aggression is not common, it's ubiquitous. In this new study, when provided anonymity, 95.1% of the near 3k men (aged 18-34) admitted to having recently used coercive strategies to get a woman to have sex who they knew did not want sex and had not consented. doi.org/10.1177/0886...
Isolate, Inebriate, Intimidate, Repeat: High Rates of Sexual Force Against Women Are Reported When Young Men Given Anonymous Surveys
Lucia F. O’Sullivan and Scott T. Ronis

Abstract
Few studies survey men who have remained undetected after engaging in acts of sexual aggression against women. Most survey women who were targets of sexual aggression or else survey men who consent to being identified. Using anonymous surveys of 2,689 U.S. and Canadian men (18–34 years), we aimed to assess rates of self-reported sexual aggression, reports of strategy effectiveness at forcing known reluctant women into sex, and men’s views of the circumstances, motivations, and positive and negative outcomes. Men reported occasions where they tried to get a woman to engage in sex who they knew she did not want and to which she had not consented. The women were individuals with whom the men shared no prior romantic or sexual history. Overall, 95.1% reported having recently used at least one of the strategies to get a woman to have sex who they knew did not want sex and had not consented. Most of these occasions (65%) resulted in successfully forcing the woman into sex. All of the 36 strategies generated from formative work were reported by at least some men; the average number ever used was 8.94. Consistent physical pressure and verbal coercion were common; overt force, including physical restraint and use of pain, was less common but not uncommon. Men who viewed themselves as better than same-aged male peers “at getting what they want sexually from women” used more forceful strategies. The men persisted for many reasons, most often because they were horny (38%) or because the opportunity arose (28%). They reported many positive outcomes from these interactions; most (70%) perceived no negative outcomes. Using anonymous survey methods provides a novel channel to capture men’s reports of the factors scaffolding their use of sexual aggression. Implications for prevention and making long...

Still one of my favourite quotes about the Polish people
“There is one thing I like about the Poles—their language. Polish, when it is spoken by intelligent people, puts me in ecstasy. The sound of the language evokes strange images in which there is always a greensward of fine spiked grass in which hornets and snakes play a great part. (...) But when they spoke to one another, sometimes in French, sometimes in Polish, I sat back and watched them fascinatedly. They made strange Polish grimaces, altogether unlike our relatives who were stupid barbarians at bottom. The Poles were like standing snakes fitted up with collars of hornets. I never knew what they were talking about but it always seemed to me as if they were politely assassinating someone. They were all fitted up with sabres and broad−swords which they held in their teeth or brandished fiercely in a thundering charge. They never swerved from the path but rode rough−shod over women and children, spiking them with long pikes beribboned with blood−red pennants. All this, of course, in the drawing−room over a glass of strong tea, the men in butter−colored gloves, the women dangling their silly lorgnettes. The women were always ravishingly beautiful, the blonde houri type garnered centuries ago during the Crusades. They hissed their long polychromatic words through tiny, sensual mouths whose lips were soft as geraniums. These furious sorties with adders and rose petals made an intoxicating sort of music, a steel−stringed zithery slipper−gibber which could also register anomalous sounds like sobs and falling jets of water.”

This seems to be more of an issue in West Germany, though. The map shows the power and thermal power plants that still use coal, their size and at which phase out of 7 they will be decarbonized. The East has barely any and they are rather small. Cf. www.bundesnetzagentur.de/DE/Fachtheme...

Not to be too optimistic but in absolute terms PL is still runner up of the solid fossil fuel consumption in the EU (Eurostat data for 2024, in thousand tonnes). Even if fast all coal burned in Poland is hard coal (less emissions) and in Germany it's brown coal, it still does not look that great yet

It resulted in: 1) the raise of Jewish population in PL to be the largest in the world, 2) raise of economic dualism in Europe, with the decimated West moving into manufacturing, better wages & rights,& the East sticking to feudalism & agriculture.

Deeper in the pile I found a notebook from the ultimate destination of the trip. I had friends there, liked 🇷🇺, spoke decent Russian (which is rusty now & I don't feel like practising it). Since they attacked Ukraine in 2014, I've been boycotting everything Russian. It makes me sadder than I thought.
