I am in a Barnes and Noble and the history section is stuffed with books about Nazis. They’re not books that are happy with Nazis, but it’s a sea of black, red, and white design motifs, blackletter type, and swastikas emblazoned on the spines. PSA, there’s more to life (and history) than Nazis.

Is there a cleverer way that Ukraine could have hit back at Trump doing a dirty oil deal with Putin to help him with gas prices in the midterms than turning off the army of Russian propagandists posing as heartland Americans with concerns about trans socialists?

I appreciate this reference. I wish folks could talk about these questions, which have long philosophical and imaginative antecedents, without so much dogmatic certainty.

No there is not, and I’m not sure what this has to do with my post which does not say that an LLM can feel pain.

I did not say the model was suffering.

My understanding of the LLM pain discourse is that no one is claiming that if the model says, “Ouch, my toe hurts,” it is feeling “pain.” Rather, there are patterns of activity which, —by some interpretation—might be said to “model” pain (in a formal way) within the overall formal system model.

Nobel Laureate Anne Carson, with one of my all-time favorite opening lines and one of my all-time favorite closing lines.
O Small Sad Ecstasy of Love

Anne Carson

I like being with you all night with closed eyes.
What luck—here you are
coming
along the stars!
I did a road trip
all over my mind and heart
and
there you were
kneeling by the roadside
with your little toolkit
fixing something.

Give me a world, you have taken the world I was.

(To deconstruct, the clearest indicator of this is this gap in attention may be the continually present AI/Not AI labels in the frame, a decision never explained in the film itself (we are referred to PBS online to read about them.)

—but it’s also what’s in your feed right now, which is to say it’s a product of the algorithmically super charged culture industries. That’s not the film Veatch set out to make, but it’s part of the same story as (again) the closing sections on the Trump admin and authoritarianism begin to suggest.

If I have a critique it’s that the fixation on the ideology of AGI leaves open (until a few minutes at the end) the question of AI as media or a form of cultural production, however pernicious. “AI” is whatever Sam Altman is staring at in the mist out past the cliffs;

Academic freedom in the U.S. has arguably reached a new nadir—maybe worse than the 50s. This is not only due to the scale and range of the assault on higher ed, which is targeting everything (individuals' views on Gaza, DEI initiatives, the curriculum, collaborative research with other countries)...
