Found in my crafting stash today: Three gallon ziplock bags of MILKWEED FLUFF. Was I planning to use it for pillow stuffing or something? And where did I get it from?? What would you do with it?
Close up of milkweed fluff. Theres a seed stuck in the fluff. Ziplock bags full of milkweed fluff on an oak table.

I don’t have much of the modern one (Thompson Peak), but I’ll see if I can upload the video I took.

I stayed at two very different fire lookout towers this month. One somewhat modern and one far more rustic. I enjoyed both! And grateful to the USFS for maintaining these old structures as unique rentals for the public.
A modern-ish fire lookout tower with large communications and cell towers next to it. A rustic fire lookout tower, which is essentially a small cabin at the top of a 41 ft wooden scaffolding. Several flights of steep stairs lead up to the cabin.

I have been told that the Salish name for the Bitterroots means “Red Mountains”. True or not, it’s an apt name.
Bitterroot Mountains framed by pines and Douglas firs. The mountains are glowing red in the morning light.

I saw hundreds of them yesterday near Kootenai Creek! It seems it’s an irruptive year for this species.

Saw hundreds of freshly emerged California Tortoiseshell butterflies today at a friend’s place. It’s been an irruptive year for them!

Last week I was in a remote part of northern Montana and saw the most glorious intact shortgrass prairie. Blooming with carpets of prairie smoke and pussytoes, wildflowers everywhere, shimmering with butterflies. I kinda lost my shit a little - is this what the world looked like when it was new??
Intact shortgrass prairie with the Sweetgrass Hills in the distance. A view from this beautiful remote site in northern MT Prairie smoke (Geum triflorum). There were carpets of them at this site. Pussytoes (Antennaria sp.).

Amazing turnout today at the Hands Off Rally in Missoula, MT!
Me and my kid with our protest signs. View of rally-goers. One amusing sign reads “And you probably thought Idiocracy was satire”. More views of the rally goers. There are thousands of people here today. More views of rally goers.

Here are our signs!
This protest signed shows a hand drawn picture of smoky the bear pointing at the viewer and surrounded by flames. The words are “only you can’t stop the DOGE bags“.Here I am holding my sign, which is a picture of the forest service emblem, but with the rebel alliance shield in place of the conifer tree. At the top of the sign, it says support federal workers.

Okay here’s what I came up with:
A protest sign depicting the USFS logo but with the Star Wars Rebel Alliance shield in the center rather than the conifer tree.

The Princess Bride is one of our family’s favorite movies. It’s also a lovely, family-friendly, resistance movie. If you haven’t seen it, you should! #resistance #PrincessBride #YouKilledMyFatherPrepareToDie
Still shot of the marriage scene in the movie, The Princess Bride. Still shot from the Princess Bride of Inigo Montoya where he confronts the six-fingered man and says, “My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die.” Hell yeah.

Theoretically we could look up all the parts we’d need to maintain this rig. When military trucks were converted for civilian use, the canvas cab tops were replaced with fiberglass and the truck was painted. Ours is orange. Maybe it was yellow before that? Original color is olive drab, of course.
A list of the publications and manuals for this truck are posted inside the cab.

Check out the gas tank fill. It has this sleeve in it that you can pull out to make it easier to fill with a carboy.
The gas tank has a metal sleeve inside that can be pulled out to facilitate pouring gas from a carboy. Kid is demonstrating it here. Another pic of the “filling sleeve”.

Here’s the front. Kid is requiring the headlights. Check out the marker lights and hooded blackout lights on the front. This is a retired military truck, btw.

The interior is rough, but check it out:
The interior of a 1954 Dodge power wagon. It is in rough shape and the driver seat, which was taken from a jeep Willys, is duct taped, and tarp with a black tarp. Nearly all the switches and controls are original as well as the steering wheel. Check out the cool old defroster which doesn’t have a connecting hose right now.Image of the very rough interior of a 1954 Dodge power wagon M 37.

My kid is fixing up our 1954 Dodge PowerWagon M37. My husband bought it for $600 and we’ve had it for nearly 30 years. It has been a good utility rig at our place in the mountains. I thought I’d share some photos of this cool old truck. #MontanaSky #Dodge #M37

The tree is up! I love decorating it with my children, though I often get a little emotional. Each ornament was a gift or was handmade. It’s like a record of our family’s life together, and of all the past Christmases. Anyway, hold your loved ones close and enjoy the time together! 🎄❤️🎄
A lit and decorated Christmas tree is standing in the corner of a room. There are windows behind it where you can see conifer trees covered in snow.

My carrion flower plant (Stapelia sp.) bloomed for the first time ever today!!
A carrion-flower plant blooming in a window. Another photo of the carrion flower plant. It has opened a little more. It is a large, pale yellow, 5-petaled flower with small red lines throughout. It smells disgusting. Truly like crap.

One of my kids once called this area of town, “Ancient Missoula” and I will always think of it that way.
A photo of the Ceretana building in Missoula, a defunct grain elevator now converted to offices and artist studios. There are the remains of the Bitterroot Line train tracks in the foreground. The sky is cloudy and lit up orange in places because the sun is setting behind me.

We’ve had some dry El Niño winters in the nearly 30 years I’ve lived here, but I can’t remember one where we had almost no snow AT ALL this late into December.
