the number of PhD student applicants sending me AI generated emails & replies is stunning. If one can't bother to type up an email, how does one expect to get through doctoral education? Do they really think we cannot tell the difference between a human composed email and an AI generated email?

Side note: I’m in Chicago. Not ATL, LA, NY. There’s no local team in these games. 88-88 and 1 of the 9 dudes just noted “oh shit, that’s a game!” So yeah. Not everyone watches women’s sports. Just me and this one finance vest guy.

Ugh. A bunch of white dudes in polos and finance bro vests just showed up. 4 of 5 TVs have baseball game on. But they can’t shut up about the one TV In front of me showing the final 1 minute of the WNBA semifinals game. The staff are agitated. Who hurt these guys?

So yeah, clearly not “Everyone watches women’s sports”, but surely WNBA semifinals are more entertaining than random baseball games. AND cis men & crappy hotel bartenders are absolutely a bigger threat to women’s sports than trans women could ever be.

I would expect what little funding SBE spent / grants they supported were cross-directorate or co-funding with TIP or other programs that this administration wants to support (AI, tech transfer). So SBE is spending as a partner, supporter, or co-sign to other agency grants, not sole-SBE proposals.

To speed up mass deportations, the Trump administration didn't just launch raids—it stripped $200M+ from nonprofit legal aid groups, bringing them to the brink of collapse. Here’s how immigrant legal defense barely survived the campaign to kneecap them:

First Trump came for immigrants. Then he came for their lawyers.
How legal aid groups survived the administration's attacks—barely.

Apparently the FBI also removed the restriction on applicants who have hired a prostitute. Which means, the applicant not only hired a prostitute, they got CAUGHT doing so. The getting caught part should be disqualifying!

I’m a little sad today. I found out a friend is in favour of banning certain library books. As a librarian, I was trained to oppose censorship. It’s in the American Library Association Code of Ethics: www.ala.org/tools/ethics We fight for your right to read.

The reading of CVs - across all academic introductions needs to cease. Audience members are there bc they know something about the person or the research. We don't need to be told they are the former vice chair & director of whatever. And if we want to know, we can check the computer in our pocket.

A big challenge, esp post-COVID (Zoom life) - we're now in the habit of raising hands & not interrupting one another. This hyper-politeness makes for long-winded speeches & prevents lively dialogue. I "invite" people to interrupt (politely) & crosstalk. This requires a strong moderator.

Mary Feeney @mkfeeney.bsky.social · 04/09/2026
This is a must read for nearly every academic I know! Audiences want a moderator who challenges the panel & keeps things moving. There is so much we can do better to not waste people's time and not be boring.

purely anecdotal, but my experience in AZ has been: pharmacists are policing access while clinic workers are advancing public health. Maybe a policy difference or difference in the consequences of violating policies

Haha I never know if I am at a CVS or Walgreens! Clinic said they would do it, after pharmacist said no. But they are waiting on delivery. Of note: pharmacist did not offer the information that I could walk 10 feet over & get it without an Rx. I only knew bc last year was the same.

Mary Feeney @mkfeeney.bsky.social · 31/08/2026
In AZ, a prescription is required to get the pharmacist to give you the shot, but if you ask the minute clinic nurse practitioner for the shot, they give it without a Rx or a reason
