I was however the first to mention Merkle Trees in a Cloudflare blog this week
Decentralized publishing does not mean accepting unverified code. Atproto repositories use signed Merkle Search Trees, so an inclusion proof connects the exact release record to a signed commit from the publisher’s account. EmDash can therefore verify the record independently instead of trusting the catalog’s copy. It then checks the plugin’s checksum, package name, version, requested access, and any required build provenance, and confirms that the downloaded bundle matches the signed record.

AKA no security for plugin repo. A fine option for people who want to raw-dog updates! I can't believe they're still quoting my Slack message out of context about a 126B market cap company doing a slopfork and license-rape of 25 years of GPL contributions. @fsf

Hey! I'm writing a post that gives a bit more detail about how we're using plugin sandboxing and atproto to keep it secure without central control. And don't worry about the license. It's not a (slop-)fork, port, or re-implementation. It's just inspired by WordPress.

I really hoped Bluesky would get the typography joke, but the joke non-understanders always win 🥹
Is this video AI slop?? It literally spells the name of the project wrong. Did no one check this? Doesn't bode well for the quality of the project itself...

For everyone keeping score of all the possible crimes Danny Tommo filmed himself committing, here's the current official tally. Now can they proscribe Patriot Platform?
Hampshire and Isle of Wight constabulary issued a statement saying a 37-year-old man, of no fixed abode, had been arrested on Wednesday night “on suspicion of destroying ships or fixed platforms or endangering their safety under section 11 of the Aviation and Maritime Security Act 1990”.

The police said Thomas was suspected of committing “criminal damage, criminal damage with intent to endanger life, and conduct endangering ships, structures or individuals under section 58 of the Merchant Shipping Act 1995”

And Pichai's example of AGI is not only something that any modern LLM could do, few people would even find it worth mentioning.
Pichai believes his company’s future depends on something like this. Imagine if you could tell Google Maps, “I’d like to go to the airport, but I need to stop off on the way to buy a present for my nephew.” A more generally intelligent version of that service — a ubiquitous assistant, of the sort that Scarlett Johansson memorably disembodied three years ago in the Spike Jonze film “Her”— would know all sorts of things that, say, a close friend or an earnest intern might know: your nephew’s age, and how much you ordinarily like to spend on gifts for children, and where to find an open store. But a truly intelligent Maps could also conceivably know all sorts of things a close friend wouldn’t, like what has only recently come into fashion among preschoolers in your nephew’s school — or more important, what its users actually want. If an intelligent machine were able to discern some intricate if murky regularity in data about what we have done in the past, it might be able to extrapolate about our subsequent desires, even if we don’t entirely know them ourselves.

This works well for me, especially when enforced by a Kimi review bot
Comments
Comments are evergreen and addressed to a future reader of the code -- not to whoever reviews the PR. Most comments agents write should not exist. A comment earns its place only when:

the code is unclear and genuinely can't be made clearer (first try making it clearer), or
there's a non-obvious reason for something the reader would otherwise get wrong (an ordering constraint, a footgun, an invariant).
Comments are not:

PR descriptions or summaries of the change
messages to the reviewer
justification for a decision ("intentionally", "for safety", "we accept", "unlike X")
narrative about what you tried and rejected
restatements of what the code plainly does
Never reference issues, PRs, or review threads in comments -- they're stale narrative the moment the change merges; that context belongs in the commit message and PR description. Never number comments.

Tool directives are exempt from all of the above:

Surprisingly good benchmark. Fable gives you a list of real towns that either have a spooky setting, name, folklore or history. It also gives tips for making an invented name sound spooky, with examples.
Oh nice, good hunting ground. The trick is towns whose names already sound like the first line of the story. Some real ones:

New England rot

Dunmore, Vermont – lake town, fog off the water
Ipswich, Massachusetts – older than the witch trials, salt marshes
Bucksport, Maine – actually has a cursed founder's grave legend already
Jaffrey, New Hampshire – Mt Monadnock looming over everything

Appalachian hollow

Matewan, West Virginia – mine massacre history, real blood in the ground
Saltville, Virginia – prehistoric bone beds and salt works
Brasstown, North Carolina – sounds friendly, isn't, tucked in a valley
War, West Virginia – the name aloneMidwest emptiness

Cairo, Illinois – a genuinely dying town at the meeting of two rivers, half-abandoned already
Pawnee Rock, Kansas – nothing but horizon
Frankenmuth, Michigan – aggressively cheerful Bavarian tourist town, which is its own kind of unsettling

Desert and West

Truth or Consequences, New Mexico – hot springs, weird name origin, weirder energy
Bodie, California – actual preserved ghost town, "arrested decay" is the official policy
Tonopah, Nevada – has a clown motel next to a cemetery, I'm not making that up
Concrete, Washington – grey company town under a dam

If you want to invent one instead, the pattern that works: a resource town outlived its resource (mill, mine, cannery), one syllable of the name should feel wrong – Harlow's Ferry, Cold Ash, Gurney. Bonus dread if the town is named after a person nobody remembers anything about.

What's the flavour – slow folk horror, haunted house, something cosmic? That'd narrow which of these fits.

Google AI Overview is terrible, and not at all representative of the capabilities of current models. In any case, I was referring to comprehension of text in its context (so uploaded or searched) not recalled from its training data.
what is the symbolism of the talking horse in great expectationsThere is actually no talking horse in Charles Dickens’ Great Expectations. You might be mixing up Dickens' Victorian classic with Jonathan Swift’s satirical masterpiece Gulliver’s Travels (which features the Houyhnhnms, a race of highly intelligent, talking horses), or perhaps the 1960s television show Mister Ed.

Amazing quote in the FT from a Makerfield voter. Supports the far right, but *still* wants Burnham to win. giftarticle.ft.com/giftarticle/...
“I’m going to vote Restore because I want their voice to be heard, but I want Andy Burnham to win,” he said. “I don’t want Labour to win, I want Andy Burnham to win, because I think he’ll get PM and I do think he’ll make a change, and then in two years’ time we can have a general election.”

If anything, the headline undersells it. These were patients who started GLP-1s *after* diagnosis, and it cut the risk of progressing to stage 4 by 31-50%! That's incredible
In patients with stage I-III colorectal, liver, breast, or lung cancers, those who started a GLP-1 drug after their cancer diagnosis had a 31% to 50% lower risk of progression to stage IV disease compared with patients who initiated another class of antidiabetic drug, DPP-4 inhibitors, reported Mark David Orland, MD, of the Cleveland Clinic Taussig Cancer Institute
