my hottest take: the Bicentennial built the foundations, "civic engagement" funding from 1980s thru 2000s extended them, now whatever money there is is going into arts/culture is about adding more content which is actually quite retrograde and why things aren't hitting

I would add that the reason that they looked/felt like Bicen is that was the last time there was a mass infusion of material resources into cultural institutions--in many ways, we're still operating within those paradigms because no one came along and funded the exploration necessary for new ones.

I was a talking head in a documentary that has apparently been viewed by half a million Germans in five days! I walked around DC in the freezing cold and complained about not having representation so very on brand!

I think part of this has to do with assumptions about where "civics" lies: for the right, it's in the academy and educational spaces, while for the left its with community engagement. Hence, funders like Mellon are redirecting funds to these types of projects...

among other things, it's clear that the authors have not thought seriously about public history since the 1990s If I were peer reviewing this I'd send it back. And yet this is supposed to be taken seriously as a report on the state of the field? '

I love the idea of a book prize for longevity--the slow burn award! So many "big" books flame out quickly and so many others just get more important or become sleeper hits years after publication--let's reward the latter!

better: A disenfranchised D.C. has always been the canary in the coal mine: what happens here (no-knock warrant, sending riot cops to protests, etc.) eventually happens elsewhere. If the state didn't have a handy testing ground for repression, would be harder to institute these measures nationally.

must confess that I do this a lot because I usually read several books and think with all of them in order to get to my own ideas and I also want my readers to understand that. Humanities analysis isn't 1:1 all the time, sometimes a footnote can be about both showing and inviting work!

it's interesting, but not surprising, that the signature genre of 250th-themed text ended up being the listicle.
