Our PhD students recently dedicated an evening to community service by volunteering at the Food Bank for Central & Northeast Missouri. The event brought students together for an opportunity to support local families while strengthening connections within the department.

Dr. Milyo is the first affiliate from MU to participate in the fellowship, which has a distinguished history dating to 1933. Nobel prize winners from several disciplines, award-winning journalists, and professors from Harvard, Yale, Columbia and other leading institutions are alumni of the program.

Survey responses suggest that participants found the workshops useful and appreciated the efficient and innovative format. The Social Impact Lab plans to hold IDEA Workshops after the spring and fall semesters, with the next round expected in mid-December.

The goal is to give scholars early feedback while they are in the development stage. “Sometimes that means strengthening a promising idea. Other times it means identifying barriers early or reconsidering whether a project should move forward in its current form" says Mike Pesko, director of SIL.

The Social Impact Lab (SIL) recently held its inaugural IDEA Workshop series, a “research speed dating” format to help test early-stage ideas before investing time in them. Across three 90-minute sessions, 21 scholars presented research ideas and received rapid, structured feedback from peers.

The award-winning paper, “Financing from Workers: Can Labor Market Power Mitigate Financial Frictions?”, coauthored with Yan Bai, combines empirical and theoretical analyses to show that labor market power can provide firms with an additional source of internal financing.

The students were mentored by Dr. Alyssa Carlson as part of her Economics Research Experience for Undergraduates program funded by NSF. Throughout last summer and fall, students designed their own research questions, collected and cleaned data, and analyzed their results using econometrics methods.

Parsons is Kemper Fellowship winner whose award-winning teaching of Economics 1014 is mission critical to the Department. His service as the Director of Undergraduate Studies has become a keystone of department administration. Parsons is a Mizzou alumni who joined the Department Faculty in 2014.

Kaplan joined the dept in 2013 as an econometrician. His research is in top field journals & his role as the Dir. of Doctoral Studies has been a key to the success of the program over recent years. Kaplan has advised several PhD students, now at large banks & in tenure-track jobs in China & the U.S.

When asked to describe his SREP summer experience, Sawyer replied that the program “introduced me to new research approaches, challenged me to problem-solve, and allowed me to make progress on work with real-world impact.” He plans to present the findings during Show Me Research Week in the spring.

Over the summer, Sawyer worked with Dr. Koedel studying the financial and labor-market impacts of the California teacher pension plan. The extension period allows Sawyer to continue that work and start studying the source(s) of teacher-reported increases in classroom disruptions in K-12.
