Today is Friday the 13th, which I herby declare is Data Science Awareness Day! We love to repeat a story that reinforces our own nonsense; let's never stop. But as we do this, let's promote awareness of how data science methods help us counter cognitive biases and arrive at better conclusions.

Dang why didn’t the founders of this republic just say “the government can’t use deadly force on protesters and then say they had it coming?” Oh right they 100% did. More than say it, they structured the government around it.

Text of the first amendment of the constitution, highlighted: “abridging the freedom of speech, or the press; or the right of people to peaceably to assemble, and petition the government for a redress of grievances.”

“Seattle’s heartbeat is in its roots, now that heartbeat has a seat at City Hall” - Cynthia Green

The event was understated and the crowd was well behaved. The rowdiest moment was when the soft-spoken Transit Fairy stepped forward to swear Mayor Wilson in, and the people demanded they turn up her mic. 🧚🏻‍♀️

Chat “geo folks” GPT helped me come up with algorithms for custom label placement. I guess asking how to draw radial lines outward from a center point called “brc_man” was a bit of a tell…

ChatGPT is “geo folks” apparently, and thus already knows all about Black Rock City (I did not mention that is what I’m mapping) … #burningman #rstats #cartography #gischat

Apropos of nothing and without my mention of what I was labeling, it let me know we could “echo the layout of Black Rock City….”

I asked how it knew so much: “many geo folks (including me!) have followed projects that mapped it creatively.”

DUMMYMANDER (n): A gerrymander that has narrow margins to electorally benefit the gerrymandering party and has a high probability of backfiring. AS IN, dear friends in Texas: there is not further the GOP can go to dice left-leaning voters out of existence, or they would.

Hey, this popped up in my feed. Since the top-level post was a screenshot I searched for and read the actual article: techcrunch.com/2025/04/24/w... Attaching the relevant part where @sarahp.bsky.social reports accurately and in no way punks Bluesky. Keep up the good work everyone!

Despite the platform’s decentralized nature, the majority of Bluesky users today interact with the service via Bluesky’s official app, powered by the AT Protocol. While in theory, anyone can run the various parts of the infrastructure that make up the protocol, including PDS, relays, and other components, it’s still early days for the social network, so few have done so.
Those who did, however, were not impacted by the outage.
