ALSO LAST NOTE! If you try to resurrect one of these yourself: #1 CHANGE THAT BATTERY IMMEDIETELY. #2 Install Disinfectant right out the gate and USE IT macintoshgarden.org/apps/disinfe... Contrary to what people think, the old Macs had virus's and they are rampant through the online repositories

Oh -- Before I Forget: FDHD means Floppy Disk High Density. Before this model, Macs used a proprietary 400k and 800k floppy disk format. The FDHD used a 1.44meg format and by extension allows disk sharing between it and MSDOS based computers.

miyagami noriko @miyagami.bsky.social · 14/11/2025

As you can see. I suck at it.

100

miyagami noriko @miyagami.bsky.social · 14/11/2025

But, in the end, I finally got to start learning how to type properly using Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing on a Macintosh SE FDHD... like my wife did back thirty years ago.

It was not all sunshine and roses. There were some issues in which Noodles tested my patience with her ignoring some of the SCSI conventions. Which is an entirely different story.

100

miyagami noriko @miyagami.bsky.social · 14/11/2025

The BlueSCSI allows one to emulate a SCSI Chain. There are other options, but I went with the one that had better documentation available before purchase. I chose the external because, "reasons." The ADB-WOMBAT allows a user to convert USB signals to ADB signals -- which classic Mas require.

miyagami noriko @miyagami.bsky.social · 14/11/2025

Two more things I needed were a keyboard and mouse. Which when you hear the word Vintage, you should think EXPENSIVE. So I went another route. Meet The BlueSCSI emulator and the USB-Wombat. bluescsi.com www.bigmessowires.com/usb-wombat/

110

miyagami noriko @miyagami.bsky.social · 14/11/2025

It was not all easy. In order to get her working properly, I needed to change out her 3.6v 1/2AA Battery, or as they are affectionately known as, "Bombs." They have a habit of exploding in their old age and destroying old tech. As you can see in this repeated image, the battery was intact.

miyagami noriko @miyagami.bsky.social · 14/11/2025

She came to me with a working 20MB Hard Drive with System 6.0.5 as her operating system. The hard drive was also manufactured in 1989, so the fact that it worked... it was a miracle. You should have seen how clean she was inside. There was almost zero dust accumulated.

100

miyagami noriko @miyagami.bsky.social · 14/11/2025

Here you see her -- I named her Noodles -- booted up showing her with System 6.0.8 (apologies about the interlaced monitor and photographs) and the astute eye will notice that she has two active SCSI Hard Drives (Noodles and Bento). Both are 2GB in size (On a computer manufactured in 1989).

100

miyagami noriko @miyagami.bsky.social · 14/11/2025

Here we see it in my office with the protective dust cover removed. Yes, that is an @kaceyfish.bsky.social original on my office wall. That is also a huge coffee cup, and Applejack, a cute Cthulhu, a Caterpie, and a whole bunch of light novels and anime figurines.

At BLFC a friend of mine gave me an absolutely awesome gift -- at least for a person like me -- YMMV. A Apple Macintosh SE FDHD manufactured between 03 Nov 1989 and 13 Nov 1989. Even more so, it was in spectacular condition as it had been in their closet for years. Pardon the office mess.

180

miyagami noriko @miyagami.bsky.social · 14/11/2025

The red thing is the battery on the SE FDHD. That battery was from November of 1989 and miraculously had not exploded. @crossbowroof.bsky.social

010

miyagami noriko @miyagami.bsky.social · 14/11/2025

Be really careful of the battery. Those things can be very dangerous. If it is still intact, remove it. If I remember correctly, it uses a 3.6v 1/2AA battery. At least that is what the SE uses.

110

miyagami noriko @miyagami.bsky.social · 14/11/2025

It was a gift from VulpesRex at BLFC. It is in spectacular condition.

Always weird to fins Kojima out of his tree.

Well, Fire Emblem 2003 GBA (FE7 The Blazing Blade) project that I have been working on for more than half a year is now complete. Was it worth it? I think so.

Did you ever think about it? Every single day, somewhere on Earth, someone is looking up at the stars and deciding to become an astronomer, an engineer, or an astronaut. The dream of space never stops, and to me that is about as awesome as it gets.

I can not find easy words to say a proper thank you to the staff at MFF's Art Show for honouring Kacey's art this year. It is a truly special thing. Thank you all. @crossbowroof.bsky.social Could you pass this on?

You should have seen how many seconds of ammunition those belts had too. Especially the M1919 pair in the rear. Oh, those also were taking out Six-o-Clock Bandits in some nice nifty fireballs while set to spray and pray.

And they showed an American Dauntless pilot take a 20mm round in the shoulder and fly his aircraft back to the carrier where a sling fixed everything. Bonus note. Two M2s in that configuration can not make a Zeke explode like that at that range.

I separate Northern Vietnam and Southern Vietnam because the dichotomy between the two areas (Hà Nội and Sài Gòn) was super stark--almost like two separate countries that spoke a common language.

I am still having a bit of a time processing that in the past month I have been to Japan Tokyo/Narita airport twice, Northern Vietnam, Southern Vietnam, Cambodia, and Thailand... And on top of that, my wife took me to see Cyndi Lauper in concert in Portland two nights ago. It has been a great month
