Wayne chuckled to himself and threw a blanket over them, glad that although he was the first person to see how Eddie looked at Steve, Steve was finally the second.

In the morning Wayne arrived back home to Steve’s car still in the driveway and the boys fast asleep on the couch, facing each other and holding hands as if they drifted off mid conversation. Eddie’s muscles would be screaming when he woke up but for now they were too peaceful to disturb.

Wayne glanced over his shoulder before he left. Steve cleared his throat and slowly put a hand to Eddie’s shoulder, gently asking if he was ok. Wayne went then, happy to leave them to their privacy.

He opened his mouth as if to protest but Wayne held a hand up between them. ‘Talk’ he said again. ‘Do both of you a favour’ Steve looked like he’d seen a ghost but managed a small nod. Wayne nodded back at him and went towards the door.

Wayne smiled gently at Steve and reached out to fix the collar of his polo, ruffled from where Eddie had grabbed it for stability ‘You two should talk’ Wayne said quietly, brushing imaginary dust off Steve’s shoulder. Steve looked back at Eddie quickly before turning to Wayne again

Steve didn’t know he could. He schooled his expressions and kept his composure until he thought he was alone and then he let it out in safe little spaces where he could keep it to himself.

Wayne understood it then, when he saw the look on Steve’s face. There was a small terror that flashed across his expression almost as though he was embarrassed to be caught. And there it was. The reason Wayne had never seen Steve looking at Eddie, the way Eddie looked at Steve.
