Mostly up for sci fi, comics, game and rock and roll, plus a bit of politics. More of a listener than a talker.

Taken on this day, Douglas Way, Deptford London.
A box of Action Man/Gi Joe type dolls in a flea market. All are dressed in army fatigues except one in a frilly top and miniskirt. He knows how to stand out in a crowd.

And now Tim Curry! Obviously there is one roll he’ll forever be remembered for, but I also remember him as Shakespeare in a BBC series long ago and for his roles in Clue and Muppet Treasure Island. There’s also this, which I listen to from time to time: youtu.be/jWzqcele1tY?...

I get that live in the woke bubble, but I don’t see this as a vote winner with anyone under 60. And the over 60s are going to be dropping like flies if heatwaves like this keep coming.
Quote from Richard Tice of Reform UK speaking today, 17 August:

I am old enough to remember 1976 this feels a bit to same. That was 50 years ago. I think when it is a bit warm, let’s enjoy it.

And if it means that English wine and sparkling wine gets better and better – fantastic! That means we can take on the French, fantastic! Let’s celebrate some of things rather than just be sort of doom and gloom about it.

When I was a kid, probably nearly 50 years ago now, I was watching the Sooty Show on TV and they had an acrobatic troupe on where one of the performers had only one leg. Hopping around, doing backflips and vaulting through hoops and all that stuff. I still think about that from time to time.

David Hockney anecdote My mum and dad were friendly with an older lady in the little seaside town in NZ where I grew up. Every year she got a Christmas card drawn by the son of the couple she’d lived next door to in Bradford before she moved to NZ the late 50s. Yep, it was him.

I am pleased to see people I admire get honours but also slightly disappointed that they didn’t turn it down. (Yes, I am thinking about Sir Idris - good for him, a great actor and by all accounts a thoroughly good egg, but…)

We *say* we want moderation and stability but in reality we crave the dopamine hit of anonymous briefings, backroom tittle tattle and hidden plots unfolding behind closed doors.

As regards The Boys,as much as I have enjoyed it I do sometimes think to myself that we could have had an Astro City TV series, but instead we live in this reality.

So that Trump Jesus picture, what do you think this thing in the background is?
A humanoid figure floating in the background of the Trump as Jesus photo. It looks like it has four arms and a star-shaped head, like something from an HP Lovecraft story.

I don’t know that I can handle four more years of this so maybe we should just hand over the keys to Farage and let him drive us over the cliff to get it over and done with.

Is it just impossibly naive to expect Andy Burnham and Keir Starmer to work together for the benefit of the people of the UK? They will end up fighting over a poisoned chalice without ever understanding that it is they who poisoned it.

Godspeed, @tinstargames.bsky.social ! So sad to hear the news. I knew Steve off and on for 30 years, starting in the olden days on rpg.net and had the privilege to be part of “SteveCon” when he was living in the UK. He brought so much joy and fun to the world, we’re poorer for his passing.

It’s not just that This Is Spinal Tap is achingly funny, but that the story of the friendship between David St Hubbins and Nigel Tufnel rings true. They are more than funny caricatures, that’s what really sets it apart, IMO.

I like the way this one gets cut off
A screen shot from the Guardian, the headline says “Three neo-Nazis jailed for plotting terror attacks on UK mosques and synagogues”. The subhead is cut off and reads: “Group of ‘like-minded extremists’ styled after the SS and amassed arse.”

www.ft.com/content/59f1... It’s a branding exercise. Call IHT, land tax and CGT reforms “wealth tax measures” (which they kind of are) and people would lap it up.

Stop talking about wealth taxes — make these reforms instead
Any sane discussion of changes that both right and left could agree on is being crowded out by tax populism
