Medicare in Australia is paid for by a 1.5% levy on your taxable income. Collected by the tax office and fed directly to Dept Social Services.

They have tried moving the bus port at least twice that I know of. The best option would be to lean into the situation and declare Moorabool St the major interchange - and close it to public traffic.

I think it bears repeating; Putin could end this war today - all he needs to do is stop attacking Ukraine.

How about we start producing CFCs again since the Ozone hole is nearly closed.

In Australia we are just into Spring, and already there is a 27C (80F) day predicted for the weekend.

My father has very many old Jazz records on 78. He would like to give them to someone who cares, but there doesn't seem to be much demand for such things. We are in Australia and shipping costs to anywhere else would be prohibitive.

I don't understand why you need to register EVERY time. Surely the records from last time are still present. But I am not USAian and we have an independent electoral commission that manage literally everything about elections in a totally non-partisan way.

And with technology changing so fast, in a couple of years AI will require much less compute power. So the data centres will be stranded assets before they are finished!

If we are going to convert a planet so it can support human life, how about starting with the one we are already living on?

AI is not sustainable as the resource hog it currently is. That means it either collapses under its own weight, or it becomes enormously more efficient. In other words, the new data centres popping up everywhere are already stranded assets and wasted money.

I'm stuck on the *at least* four grandparents. Are their people who have more? Or are we including non-biological?

Peter @mitchepr.bsky.social · 02/06/2026
AI is not viable as a technology if it continues to use this level of resources. Therefore, either it does not succeed or it becomes much more efficient. In either case, the new data centres will very soon become stranded assets.

The highest fertility groups are the lowest developed countries. Higher technology and social advancement leads to lower fertility. Are you saying that America will become the least developed country in the world in the next couple of years?

I think this should be *despite* government policies. It has almost entirely been led by households while the major political parties fight over whether something should be done.

The story of the Boy Who Cried Wolf is about a male who lied to get attention. The story of Cassandra is about a female who told the truth and was ignored. This seems to be a statement on something or other.

Victoria has made public transport free – NSW hasn’t. Has there been any difference in uptake?
Public transport access, travel time and familiarity with the network all play a role in how many people switch away from driving.

"wokeness"?? SF has been "woke" (whatever your definition) since Jules Verne with Capt Nemo. Or, if you consider mythology to be SF - then Loki was canonically trans.

V/Line appear to be constantly running close to their limit with no buffer for unexpected situations. This is apparent whenever an incident arises. Metro in contrast generally have an option to adapt. Admit I use V/Line more so my evaluation may be biased :-)

Nostradamus said the 3rd anti-christ would arise in the West. He would draw those of poor faith as if the Messiah, but would work to destroy the work of the true Christ. All rubbish of course.

Honest question since I don't know American or general military history: When was the last time that the USA *won* a war? Especially one that they started? Also - when has any US military action resulted in a positive result for the target country?

It takes a very specific skill-set to run a government into the ground when they can quite literally print their own money. Indeed the US currency is the world standard - how bad a manager must one be to destroy that massive advantage?

Australia is accomplishing amazing things around renewables generally. The thing is that it is almost entirely community led. The politicians refuse to make a commitment because the country is led by the mining lobby. The economy is based on "ship the land off-shore".

Haven't heard any of that on Australian News. And the leader of one of our major parties believes renewables are unsustainable and wants to build nuclear plants.

Peter @mitchepr.bsky.social · 19/03/2026
Rather than free PT, perhaps the government could encourage Work-From-Home. Like lock-down, that would significantly reduce petrol usage.

This is how it works throughout Australia, and many other countries. Voters register once when they turn 18. The rest of the time, the officials have a record of who is registered to check against.
