I watched The Long Goodbye, directed by Robert Altman, starring Elliott Gould I’ve seen this movie called a satire, but that didn’t feel quite right to me. It’s very nihilistic, and Gould’s character is very irreverent, but the movie itself isn’t. I liked it - I enjoyed the sustained bleakness

I think my worst trait as a writer in terms of the process, is that I so rarely end a day of writing at a stopping point. Sometimes it happens naturally, but I swear most of the time I return to discover I left off in the middle of a sentence, staring down a semi-colon that trails off into the abyss

I watched Angel Face, directed by Otto Preminger, starring Robert Mitchum (which is the main reason I picked it) It wasn’t very good. Predictable and weird and like, sexist in the way movies from the 50s were that made the plot and twists uninteresting. Really didn’t do much for me

Watched Jean-Luc Godard’s “Breathless” An interesting movie. I liked it a good deal, but it definitely goes in the category of classic movies that, while I can see why they were classics in the first place, didn’t blow me away. I was a big fan of Belmondo’s acting too

Watched Pakula’s All the President’s Men - wanted to finish his “paranoia trilogy” I think the craziest part of this movie is that it came out only a couple of years after Watergate and its so good. Very tense, very frantic. Great acting all around ofc. The quintessential political thriller, really

Watched “Three Days of the Condor” directed by Sydney Pollack and starring Robert Redford Really good spy movie. Really great soundtrack too, really snazzy. Very high energy and intense. Still politically relevant to this day - even 50 years ago we were obsessed with oil in the Middle East

Most recent watch was The Battle of Algiers, directed by Gillo Pontecorvo An immeasurably powerful film. Like the rawest documentary that’s not actually a documentary. Every shot, every line, every expression - literally not a single miss amongst them. Not a wasted second

Newest movie I finished is Kurosawa’s Ran What do I even say at this point about Kurosawa? He was like in his 70s when he made this and it’s a masterpiece. How many masterpieces can one director have? And Tatsuya Nakadai was fucking magnificent as the lead, just an unbelievably good actor. Christ

I watched Thunderball, the 4th James Bond film. It was fine. It was a Bond film where they saw what made Goldfinger so successful and leaned into them. Which meant it was fun, but nothing special. Also, this one was the first where Bond’s behavior towards women felt truly predatory at times

Watched Ingmar Bergman’s “Through a Glass Darkly” - movie I’ve wanted to watch for ages Fascinating film. An isolated look at the human condition. Almost meta. Not as effective as The Seventh Seal, imo, but still good. The lead, Harriet Anderson, was a powerhouse.

At @graciart.bsky.social’s recommendation I watched Sam Peckinpah’s The Wild Bunch. I always enjoy a good “end of the Wild West” type western. Peckinpah does a great job of making guns feel powerful. Many of his filming techniques felt ahead of their time - I was surprised at how old the film was

“Kwaidan” directed by Masaki Kobayashi was a movie I recently watched. Technically a horror but more eerie. Also an anthology so hard to rate The 2nd short “The Woman of the Snow” was my fav. Tragic and beautifully shot with really amazing backgrounds and scenery. Almost felt more like a play

Watched The Hidden (1987) directed by Jack Sholder and starring everyone’s favorite, Kyle MacLachlan (Chris Mulkey who was also in Twin Peaks was in it too) Fun movie! Like a B-movie but with a bit bigger budget. Nice simple sci-fi plot and plenty of violence. Enjoyable even if was nothing special

Another movie I watched was 1992’s Full Contact dir. by Ringo Lam, starring Chow Yun-fat and Anthony Wong It was alright. Pretty standard HK action film. Lots of betrayal and shooting and death. The “bullet cam” thing they did was cool though.

Watched Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In (directed by Soi Cheang) at the recommendation of a friend. A more recent HK action movie Plot and characters weren’t anything to write home about, but the action was incredible. The last fight scene especially. Kowloon is such a cool setting too
