The biggest lesson I've learned from these past 25 years is that hatred may quiet down, but it doesn't go away. It just lays in wait for its next opportunity. That was actually something my grandmother (a Holocaust survivor) tried to teach me well before 9/11, but I was too young to understand then.

The Islamophobia and nationalistic vitriol quieted down eventually, once the country realized how the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan were so horribly mismanaged. The biggest mistake the most optimistic of us made was assuming we'd actually made significant headway against white supremacy.

I was lucky. I had already experienced so much of the world before that day. I had seen suffering, poverty, and horrific destruction outside of America. Other kids didn't, and in retrospect it grows more obvious how the road block to far right authoritarianism was drawn and lured so many down it.

Per my last repost, I was 14. We had taken a class trip in June 2001 to NYC and DC, so I had pics of the Twin Towers from the Ellis Island ferry. That was a WILD time to come into a higher level of consciousness of the world around you because your first real lesson was essentially fear and hatred.

Whelp, just learned about the Central Synagogue stabbing this past weekend, so here’s some food for thought: Zionism is only popular because non-Jews spend so much time making Jews feel unsafe where they live. Take away the threat of being hated for existing as Jews, and Zionism loses its teeth.
