In de onderzoeksperiode bleven media terughoudend in het gebruik van het woord genocide. Journalisten schreven de term nog steeds veelvuldig toe aan een derde partij. En de termen stonden gedurende de hele periode vrijwel nooit in een kop of intro.

Het was een van de redenen dat Eduard Cousin zijn ontslag indiende bij de NOS. ‘Inmiddels spreken Israëlische leiders openlijk over de doelstelling om Gaza te vernietigen en ontvolken; de facto Palestijnen in Gaza uit te roeien’, schrijft hij in zijn afscheidsmail. ‘Daar zijn ze al een heel eind mee op weg, maar het is nog niet voltooid. Ik denk dat de NOS goed moet nadenken hoe de berichtgeving over een misdaad van een dergelijke omvang eruit zou moeten zien.’

De hoofdredacties verklaren deze terughoudendheid verschillend. ‘We hebben er zeer bewust voor gekozen deze termen niet als losstaand “stempel” te hanteren in onze berichtgeving, maar wel waar in de logica van de tekstopbouw voldoende ruimte was voor een heldere onderbouwing van dit woordgebruik’, zegt Waagmeester van de NOS. ‘Genocide is een juridische categorie, een historisch zware term en ook een frame in vele conflicten’, zegt Philippe Remarque, adjunct-hoofredacteur van het AD.

‘We zijn niet zozeer terughoudend geweest met termen zoals genocide, als wel “‘zorgvuldig”’, reageert hoofdredacteur Patricia Veldhuis van de NRC. ‘Uiteindelijk is het onze taak als journalisten om precies te beschrijven wat er plaatsvindt, bijvoorbeeld grootschalige verwoesting en uithongering, wat experts daarover zeggen en welke consequenties dat heeft. Het kan daarbij relevant zijn de term genocide te gebruiken, maar dat vaker doen maakt de journalistiek niet per definitie krachtiger of beter.’

Naast de data-analyse benaderden we ook bijna tachtig journalisten en eindredacteuren die na 7 oktober 2023 bij de onderzochte media betrokken zijn geweest bij de verslaggeving over Gaza. Bijna veertig van hen spraken we uitgebreid. Hoewel deze rondgang uiteraard niet representatief is, komt er wel een duidelijke tweedeling naar voren.

De journalisten die tevreden terugkijken op de verslaggeving van hun medium zijn vaak ouder en overwegend man. Een groot deel van hen gaf aan van oudsher sympathie te koesteren voor Israël, alhoewel de meesten vertelden dat hun mening de afgelopen jaren flink veranderde. Zij waren vaak tevreden over de ‘balans’, ‘evenwichtigheid’ en ‘feitelijkheid’ van de verslaggeving.

De collega’s die ontevreden zijn over de manier waarop hun medium, zeker in het begin, de verslaggeving aanpakte, zijn over het algemeen een stuk jonger, vaker vrouw en diverser qua achtergrond.

Ten minste twaalf journalisten zijn inmiddels vertrokken bij het medium waarvoor zij werkten. Vaak deden zij dat, net zoals Cousin, met een intern of publiek statement waarin zij hun kritiek op de Gaza-verslaggeving kenbaar maakten. Het gaat altijd om journalisten die vinden dat hun medium te weinig kritisch was op Israël. Andersom vonden wij geen journalisten die bij een medium vertrokken omdat zij het Palestijnse geluid daarin te sterk vonden.

De ontevreden journalisten kunnen talloze voorbeelden oprakelen van aanpassingen, woordkeuzes en invalshoeken waarmee ze het niet eens waren. Voormalig NOS-redacteur Cousin zegt bijvoorbeeld dat hij Palestijnse doden niet met emotioneel beladen termen mocht omschrijven, terwijl bij de herdenking van 7 oktober in 2024 volgens hem bewust de keuze is gemaakt om juist wel expliciete termen als ‘bloedbad’ en ‘moordpartij’ te gebruiken.

Melvyn Ingleby, voormalig Midden-Oosten-correspondent voor de NRC, zegt dat hem eens is gevraagd het woord ‘pogrom’ weg te laten uit een stuk over Israëlisch kolonistengeweld in november 2023. Ingleby had die term gekozen als omschrijving van een aanval op de Palestijnse plaats Huwara, die begin 2023 gedeeltelijk in de as werd gelegd door plunderende kolonisten. ‘De collega die me toen opbelde, begreep waarom ik die term koos – een bevelhebber van het Israëlische leger sprak nota bene zelf ook van een pogrom – maar redeneerde dat dit soort woordgebruik lezers kan afschrikken.’

Omschrijvingen van Palestijns geweld werden daarentegen soms juist aangedikt, zegt Ingleby. Zo vertelt hij dat een collega soms zonder overleg bijvoeglijke naamwoorden als ‘bloedig’ in andermans stukken zette wanneer verwezen werd naar de door Hamas geleide aanvallen van 7 oktober. ‘Onze hoofdredactie heeft die collega hier overigens wel op aangesproken toen het werd aangekaart.’ Ingleby stopte onlangs als Midden-Oosten-correspondent om aan een boek te werken. Hij benadrukt dat er ‘meerdere redenen’ waren voor zijn vertrek, maar zegt dat teleurstelling over de Gaza-verslaggeving er wel aan heeft ‘bijgedragen’.
