Went and watched the 4k remaster of Ghost in the Shell (1995) last night for the nostalgia. Classic. Now I'm watching the remake today, and I think it's even better than the OG. It fills out the story more, and the comedy actually hits. Both are great on their own.

Coming out of my hole to remind people that in order for art to reflect life, you have to actually go and do that "life" thing first. Art created in isolation can be okay, but it's better when it's actually inspired from observation. AKA: Better art is created through actually touching grass.

Upsides of the bus: Cheap. Downsides of the bus: Unreliable at least in my town; takes three hours to get where I need to get; being stuck at the stop where I get asked intrusive personal questions at 8 in the morning.

Playing with character design. These three are based off of a family of raccoons.

Three women of varying age. The design is vaguely raccoon inspired. From the left, a middle aged woman in a grey blue robe and light brown nightgown yawning; middle is an elderly lady hunched in a light brown robe with a dark brown shawl holding a grey blue cup, and at the far right is a baby in a blue onesie.

Oh sure. Doing an illustration for an IP that already exists is easy and I can envision the end result and work fast. But the second I have to do a complicated made up scene, my brain is on holiday and it takes me nearly two months just to get the values down. FML.

I took a better photo of it.

A photo of a Sailor Moon fanart ink drawing. The style features exaggerated shapes and thick outlines. On the left is the essential sailor moon pose facing the camera. (Artist note: I just realized I forgot to draw her other pony tail. I was in a deep flow state, and wanted to jump into another sketch) On the right is the whole Sailor Scout group in a redrawn screen cap in my experimental style.

Mirkat Y @mirkaty.bsky.social · 10/08/2026

Decided to give myself the day to just explore with my style. Tried not to let the reference influence too much. Still working on my silhouttes I think... But overall, this was a satisfying exercise.

030

Mirkat Y @mirkaty.bsky.social · 10/08/2026

I think it's time for a little style pivot. Lately I've been exploring Atsushi Nishigori specifically in the "Panty and Stocking" side of things (I suck at sharing my experiments) But what if I added some Genndy Tartakovsky into it too? I think those are two styles that could mesh well.

I think the worst part of this whole AI thing (for me) is that I did contemplate using it *JUST* to write my resume so that it can make it pass the resume scanners that employers use so that I can get a job. Because I am stupid and literally have never been able to write one in my life.

And we're walking. We're walking. For reals though, walk cycles are hard, and this one is just a "standard" one. Can't wait to get into the acting part of it. :D Also, while I'm doing these comparisons, I'm finding the differences interesting...

I got carried away with playing with animation stuff, and so am not ready to post anything new. SO INSTEAD! Check out some of my school work. :D

My final for Figure Drawing. The assignment was to take a high ref photo of a selected piece, project it onto yourself and take a photo to use as the reference, and then do it in any medium of our choice. I chose a Morisot painting "Before the Mirror" and did it in a combination of water color and gouache.

This is a self portrait broken up into manga/comic panels. The medium is graphite pencils. Not sure I accomplished it well, but I enjoyed working on it.

Two skeletons "looking" at each other. Practice in perspective (as you can see I suck at it, but I'm getting there)

Mirkat Y @mirkaty.bsky.social · 28/07/2026

Did you ask for a WIP update? No? Too bad. :D I'm thinking about keeping a cel-shaded copy because I like it and then doing a "painterly" version as well. I've got plans.

Base colors, simple shading and highlights added to my Good Bye Lara. I opted for a baumkuchen cake over a flower. I plan to do a lot of color experimentation with this.

Lately I've been trying to let myself do more fan art. I don't know where I got this notion that it's "not allowed" But... that's dumb. So hey. I like anime. Anyways, here's some examples of my fanart. :D #GoodbyeLara #CowboyBebop #Anime #Fanart #WIP

Desc: A lineart overlaying the sketch for my current piece of fanart based on Good Bye Lara. It features the main character "Lara" facing the viewer holding out a star. I stumbled upon this anime and was immediately enamored with it. I love that the first episode combines both the OG story and the Disney film, and then continues on to make a sweet premise for a shojo anime. I look forward to watching this series.

An old sketch study of a random scene of Spike Spiegel from Cowboy Bebop. Cowboy Bebop, along with Sailor Moon and Inuyasha were my gateway shows that really got me into anime and interested in animation.

Some various studies and learning art. Wanted to share the journey as I continue to shove knowledge into my skull. :)

A quick painting featuring three street signs on a leafy green background. This was to study values and colors. Made in CSP.

A digital drawing of fruit using various hatching techniques.

An excerpt of my notes from reading "Color and Light" by James Gurney. A really good easy read.
