Best Monday morning: Arriving at my desk to find Catherine Denial's "Pedagogy of Kindness" AND Flower Darby's "Joyful Online Teacher" waiting for me! Don't know where to start!!
A photo of two books, Denial's "pedagogy of kindness" with colorful umbrellas on the cover, and Darby's "joyful online teacher" with soap bubbles on the cover, in front of a messy desk with a coffee mug, chargers, and two screens showing pictures of waves

How do teachers build trust with students in the presence of GenAI? @rmforsyth.bsky.social and I did focus group interviews and have written up very first results in these conference proceedings: mirjamglessmer.com/2025/11/13/n...
A drawn image of two four-strand ropes being spliced together, bringing together "Trust me" and "I trust you" messages that teachers can send to students in the presence of GenAI

“Superficially Plausible Outputs from a Black Box: Problematising GenAI Tools for Analysing Qualitative SoTL Data” by @rmforsyth.bsky.social and myself published today: doi.org/10.20343/tea...
A figure summarizing an analysed data set (Glessmer, Persson & Forsyth, 2024) with an arrow going into a black box simbolising GenAI, and out again to a blurred figure that looks very similar to the first one, with text describing the main message of the paper: Results of analysing qualitative SoTL data with GenAI look superficially plausible, but are not reproducible, incomplete, different from our consensus coding, misinterpretations of data, extrapolations of data and context, and not reflecting the instructions

Trust is key for learning. In an interview study which we combined with 449 free-text responses to a survey, we found that "Engineering students trust teachers who ask, listen, and respond". Read more in Glessmer, Persson, Forsyth @rmforsyth.bsky.social (2024): www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10....
Visual summary of the student responses to the prompt "think of teachers that you trust. Please give an example of what they do that makes you trust them": Out of 449 responses, about 2/3rds mention something related to affect or cognition, but the cognition responses are about 3/4 about teaching skill and only 1/4 about subject knowledge. Values are mentioned by about 1/3rd of the responses

Hello World, I am back and excited to (re-)connect with you! And we are just in time to start our 24 easy #KitchenOceanography experiments on oceanic processes, all using only household items, for a fun way to explore ocean physics. Find all of them here: mirjamglessmer.com/24daysofkitc...
