This video comes from white conservative Christian radio host Todd Starnes’ Twitter. It is the deliberate misrepresentation of reality to stoke racist fears of “violence.” He says there is violence while showing a video which clearly isn’t violent. But fearful, hateful people will believe it.

If your story can’t be reported with another primary source, then perhaps you should drop your story or at best put it on hold until you can, unless the reason or circumstance is extraordinary.

My advice to professionals in the media or media students on the up-and-coming, is that you need to be exceedingly careful with how you approach reporting information that comes from the police. Skepticism is part of your job, so don’t suddenly forget that when it comes to police. Please.

Because never forget that when Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin killed George Floyd, the department’s initial press release (before we got Darnella Frazier’s bystander footage of it was made public) claimed he died of a “medical incident during police interaction.” And reporters ate it up.

Police and police departments have incentives to appear good, regardless of if they actually do/are good. So they carefully construct narratives to make themselves seem either actively good and heroic, or just neutral or uninvolved actors, hiding wrongdoing behind vague and imprecise language.

This should be common sense for professionals in the media. But too often, reporting stops at “police say [their own narrative of events].” Absent of any independent corroboration, statements by police should always be viewed as attempts to garner pro-police sympathies via the media.

The point they were trying to make about polarization could just as easily been explained by describing the polarized policy stances of the two parties, and then contrasting that with how multiparty systems, like Sweden, are not as polarized partly because of the multiparty nature of their system.

And also, political compasses in general are not useful to help anyone understand any politics. It is way too easy to make generalizations and oversimplifications when limited to only two components. There are countless other important political components, each with their own unique spectrums.

The way this is presented makes it seem like Democrats, Greens (both Swedish and United States), and Left have similar policy positions rooted in the same ideology, but that’s so far removed from the truth. Democrats are MUCH closer to Liberals and Social Democrats than they are to Greens and Left.

The horizontal axis is actually about economic organization. Left favors collective control, right favors private control. The vertical axis is actually about political and social authority. Top favors centralized authority, bottom favors individual autonomy. These are not inherently lib or con.
