Well-nuanced paper in @theatlantic.com : "Almost anyone with a job and a conscience can relate to the feeling that you really ought to slow down and work more carefully, but you can’t afford to, because a competitor will beat you to the punch." www.theatlantic.com/technology/2... #AI
But Occam’s razor suggests that Amodei is more or less genuine. Almost anyone with a job and a conscience can relate to the feeling that you really ought to slow down and work more carefully, but you can’t afford to, because a competitor will beat you to the punch. I feel some (admittedly less apocalyptic) version of that when I’m writing a breaking-news story. It’s why science journalists often agree to “embargoes” when covering complex new research findings rather than race to be first to report them. And planting this kind of flag on a matter of AI safety, even at some business risk, is in character for Anthropic.

Fabuleux...

Platforms routinely monetize policy-violating accounts: Thousands of pages monitored in this research exhibit quantifiable markers of coordinated inauthentic behavior, which is explicitly prohibited by Facebook.

Widespread impersonation: Most accounts use fictitious media identities or impersonate legitimate entities and individuals, which breaches all three platforms’ impersonation policies. We identified 290 individuals across 30 countries impersonated in deepfakes, including 213 politicians and 20 journalists.

Banned engagement tactics: Entire campaigns rely on banned tactics such as engagement baiting — for example, asking users to leave emojis to support political statements or politicians.

Hate speech and sexualized content: The content also appears to violate platforms’ policies on racism and hate speech. Numerous deepfakes contain sexualized imagery of female politicians.

AI content goes unlabeled: In a June 2026 sample of 1,630 YouTube deepfake videos, 93.5 percent carried no AI label. On TikTok, 91.5 percent of sampled posts were unlabeled. Tens of thousands of posts with clear watermarks of AI tools such as Gemini are systematically unlabelled on Facebook.

Monetization is a black box: No platform offers a fully functional archive showing lists of monetized accounts. Auditing accounts requires time-intensive manual checks and reliance on “guesstimates” to determine the status of accounts. No platform discloses how much monetized creators earn.

Foreign companies behind the campaigns: We analyzed three large-scale coordinated campaigns on Facebook that have been rapidly expanding in 2026:

A network linked to Pakistan targets German-speaking audiences with pro-AfD, anti-Ukraine, and anti-Muslim content, with 53 percent of its pages monetized.
Made-for-advertising campaigns operating from Vietnam run at least 1,100 Facebook pages and 280 websites targeting EU and UK audiences.

www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/0... "The journalists were not the ones who stuffed Arday into the cannon and lit the fuse. They were gravity." 💯 Perfect piece from @graemewood.bsky.social @theatlantic.com
They elevated Arday, a fragile and disturbed person, into a position where his fragility would be tested and he would be shattered. Even if the Cambridge Faculty of Education’s standards were so low that his inadequacies would remain unremarked there, he was a fellow of a Cambridge college with real scholars who would eventually be indignant upon realizing that their new colleague’s scholarship consisted of copy-paste jobs, semiliterate nonsense, and fan notes on his favorite 1990s Brit-pop. Did Arday’s allies think no one would notice? That those who noticed would be forever intimidated into polite silence? That drinking sherry in the common room of Jesus College would be a pleasant experience for Arday himself as he waited to be found out? Those who placed Arday in that situation were cruel and heartless. They may as well have taken a skin-and-bones Make-A-Wish kid, told him that he could fly, and shot him out of a cannon. The journalists were not the ones who stuffed Arday into the cannon and lit the fuse. They were gravity.

Exactement comme elle dit ⬇️💯
Cambridge hired Arday — from a pool of finalists that included two more senior women of color — at a moment when it was facing persistent questions about Black underrepresentation. Handsome and charismatic, an intellectual Horatio Alger, he offered the university a P.R. coup.

Many of the people who didn’t bother questioning Arday’s back story should have known better; today their oversight looks less like respect than condescension, as if no one took him seriously enough to think hard about what he was saying. “Arday was treated not as a scholar but as a mascot,” Jason Okundaye wrote in the left-leaning Guardian.

In retrospect, it would have been much better for all concerned if the story of his scholarly mistakes and biographical inventions had broken in a careful, professional outlet like Times Higher Education, instead of festering until it turned into a right-wing parable. Cofnas’s article catalyzed a journalistic feeding frenzy not just because it seemed to show evidence of plagiarism and falsehood, but also because it claimed there’d been a cover-up, and cover-ups tend to drive reporters wild.

For people on the left, it’s sure easier to talk about the feral excesses of the right-wing press than the willful gullibility of certain elite progressives. But both contributed to the Arday disaster. Denying that won’t protect the left. It will just leave leftists out on a limb that grows ever more shaky.

Last year, Jack Grove, a reporter for Times Higher Education, a British magazine, was preparing an article about plagiarism allegations against the star academic Jason Arday. It would have been a big story because Arday, who in 2023 became Cambridge’s youngest-ever Black professor, was a minor celebrity, thanks in part to his seemingly extraordinary biography.

Among other things, Arday said that he’d gotten his Ph.D. despite severe autism that left him nonverbal until he was 11 and unable to read until he was 18. He’d claimed to have run 600 miles in six days, which would have made him one of the world’s most accomplished ultramarathoners.

Grove sent Arday three emails with questions about both his work and his history. Arday responded by hiring one of Britain’s leading defamation firms — one known, among other things, for trying to quash investigations into Scientology — and reporting Grove to the police for harassment. As Grove later wrote, an officer told him not to contact Arday again because it was affecting the professor’s mental health. The magazine, fearing expensive litigation, killed the piece.

Oui.
Less than two months ago, in this panel, I had said: ➡️ "For the integrity of the information space, #AI is mostly an unmitigated disaster" ⬅️ 💣 💥

This Wired story https://www.wired.com/story/ai-scammers-are-better-at-building-trust-than-humans/
shows that autonomous LLM chatbots 🤖 were more effective at scamming humans (eventually, convincing them to install an app or a game on their computers or phones), than humans. Further, chatbots refused to admit they were not human, and humans mostly didn't distinguish them from human scammers during the scam (but were better at it later). A disaster indeed 💯

A complementary insight is here: https://arxiv.org/abs/2606.16475 #AI agents 🤖 outperformed human debaters, even very skilled ones (contest winners), in persuading users to do something (not nefarious in this case: giving to a children charity).

Clearly, the persuasion capabilities of #AI can and should be used for good, e.g., to reduce polarization by helping people see the viewpoint of the other side. Thomas Renault, Sacha Altay and other colleagues have raised this point recently.

But we are now sharing our information space with entities that run on GPUs in many data centers across the world and I do feel we're not ready for this 😱 and that it will get worse before it gets better.

Well, we'll have interesting stories to tell our children on the other side, I guess 😬 Or maybe we'll go back to socializing IRL❓ 😉

In her 143-page ruling, Judge McMahon ordered the agency to rescind the cuts while saying the plaintiffs had suffered “irreparable injury.”

“The injury is not limited to the loss of money,” Judge McMahon said. “It includes the disruption of protected expression, the interruption of ongoing research and publication, the cancellation or suspension of humanities programming, and the chilling effect caused by the government’s use of viewpoint-based and unauthorized criteria to terminate federal grants.”Joy Connolly, the president of the American Council of Learned Societies, said in a statement that the ruling was a victory for the Americans in all 50 states who are served by programs the endowment supports.

“The humanities are not a luxury,” she said. “They are how a democracy understands itself. Today’s decision is a step toward honoring the will of Congress and our mission as a nation — to seek the truth, know ourselves and build a better future on that knowledge.”

Mr. Epstein maintained several connections with smaller tech figures and investors throughout the years, including a Bitcoin developer, Jeremy Rubin, and a cybersecurity entrepreneur, Vincenzo Iozzo, who both brought him investment opportunities. In June 2018, Mr. Epstein moved to create a dedicated investment vehicle called Deploy Capital for Mr. Rubin. Emails suggest the plan was to fund it with $5 million.

Mr. Rubin and Mr. Iozzo declined to comment.

Mr. Rubin expressed concern about how founders might react to taking money from a sex offender. “Potential investments googling your name might get spooked,” he wrote in an email to Mr. Epstein with the subject line “Fund Optics.” Mr. Rubin suggested not naming Mr. Epstein and simply telling people, “I raised a fund.”

Mr. Epstein agreed, but still wanted to meet the founders of Mr. Rubin’s first potential investment, a cryptocurrency company called Layer1. Mr. Rubin suggested that Mr. Epstein obscure his identity by using a pseudonym or just “Jeff” on a call with the founders.

When Layer1’s founders insisted on knowing whose money Deploy Capital was investing, Mr. Epstein replied in an email to Mr. Rubin that his powerful friend Mr. Thiel would vouch for him.

Alex Liegl, a co-founder of Layer1, said the company had not taken money from Mr. Epstein or Deploy Capital and had not discussed them with Mr. Thiel.

Still, later that day after getting Mr. Epstein’s email, Mr. Rubin wrote back with good news.

“They’re not bothered,” he said. “They’ll chat with Thiel.”
