Amazing protest today outside Disney Studios. Grateful to @wgawest.bsky.social for making it happen. Fuck these fascists.

Budapest 2024, photo by me. I lived there most of last year, did not meet a single Hungarian who supported Orban or Putin. They know what’s at risk.

We’re at the “snatching nannies - including citizens - in front of children at the park” phase of fascism here in Los Angeles.

Some Jack Gilbert for this spring Saturday.

HORSES AT MIDNIGHT WITHOUT A MOON
Our heart wanders lost in the dark woods.
Our dream wrestles in the castle of doubt.
But there's music in us. Hope is pushed down but the angel flies up again taking us with her.
The summer mornings begin inch by inch while we sleep, and walk with us later as long-legged beauty through the dirty streets. It is no surprise that danger and suffering surround us.
What astonishes is the singing.
We know the horses are there in the dark meadow because we can smell them, can hear them breathing.
Our spirit persists like a man struggling through the frozen valley who suddenly smells flowers and realizes the snow is melting out of sight on top of the mountain, knows that spring has begun.

With news Orban has banned Pride marches, my photos from Budapest Pride 2024, when the United States was the only government with official representation and our ambassador carried our flag. That day, I was so proud to be American. These days, not so much. My heart breaks for us all.

From my friend in Budapest. Thousands of brave Hungarians protesting Orban. My fellow Americans, this is the way.

So you support deporting legal resident Arab pro-Palestinian supporters because "antisemitism" and not this Nazi? Got it.

Anyway, here’s a hummingbird feeding from the nascent buds of my apricot tree as clouds roll in to cool this Los Angeles night.

Jack Gilbert always finds the words I cannot. From “Refusing Heaven,” a reminder. #poetry #hope #resist

Jack Gilbert’s poem, A Kind Of Courage:
The girl shepherd on the farm beyond has been taken from school now she is twelve, and her life is over.
I got my genius brother a summer job in the mills and he stayed all his life. I lived with a woman four years who went crazy later, escaped from the hospital, hitchhiked across America terrified and in the snow without a coat. Was raped by most men who gave her a ride. I crank my heart even so and it turns over.
Ranges high in the sun over continents and eruptions of mortality, through winds and immensities of rain falling for miles. Until all the world is overcome by what goes up and up in us, singing and dancing and throwing down flowers nevertheless.

In Hungary, he’d be jailed for this. Cool. Day one and we’ve out Orbaned Orban.

It is incomprehensible to me that a fire that began at the beach has reached the Valley. That I saw its plume from Studio City today at 4:23 and didn't register what was happening. Terrifying. #LosAngeles

First fallen ornament of 2024 is the Statue of Liberty. Decapitated and shattered. Even my fucking Christmas tree gets it.

Everything is terrible here’s a picture of my diamond earring inside my dog’s colon just before it made its way to his poop. You’re welcome.
