i tried to kind of split the difference here and include films that i both consider "formative" and "all-time favorites." a film i consider formative but not a personal favorite is A Serious Man. a film i consider a personal favorite but not, like, "important" would be Mobile Suit Gundam: Hathaway

when encounters are standardized like this, negative space is also communicative. lets the game master tell intuitively which encounters have lower complexity. useful for a reference tool/encounter index

now that this project is done (it is one page of my comic which i have finished drawing, please clap) i can say that this is my favorite panel from it. i am compelled by the way hood jjk describes summoning mahoraga: “oh you think I’M losing? nah bitch, WE losing.” a fairly interesting power fantasy

as a kid I didn't really understand how end-of-season cliffhangers worked so I just assumed the bad guys won forever sometimes, which was an interesting and important lesson. good for them.

i really liked the eyes, it genuinely freaked me out to see a maraudrone with a full human face. felt fitting for a manticore, especially because the topsell illustration used to scare me as a child. but the eyeless version looks good too, so that’s ok

in my experience also at a certain point wrt this stuff the speaker has basically fully detached from any kind of empirical reality and pushing back doesn’t really do anything to change their mind. you can burn the bridge entirely but i lack certainty that it’s the best/only moral thing to do

sometimes youre stuck in a situation where someone else, consciously or not, uses the material leverage they have over you to subject you to a torrent of hateful garbage. it sucks and i dont really know what you (anyone) can “do” about it

i think one of the benefits of robots is you can use things that suggest a mouth without actually being a mouth. like giving a monster a big gaping garbage disposal full of blades to evoke the biting concept, and then putting the smile somewhere else

even if not every enemy ends up using it, i think this is a great format for little guys. like, in a world where a more involved enemy takes up half a page and then you use the other half for a couple of sentries/familiar blocks like this one, that’s still pretty nice, concise formatting

irken society is very strange. i sometimes wonder if invaders are a relatively low-status caste that’s tricked into thinking they’re more significant via ceremonial pomp. in some ways they feel like they’re satirizing military recruits. probably just all irken jobs aside from tallest suck i guess

yes, you’re correct that the american “how to draw manga” books were by dunn although at least one of the volumes (2) seems to feature art/input by warren. warren did do some kind of “how to draw manga” material at some point, but his main zeitgeist contribution if anything was probably dirty pair

meowth is his own weird thing where he feels like he should be similar to azrael from the smurfs or something, but he’s attached to two low-level characters instead of one high-level one. i guess the most surprising thing is i can’t really think of any modern pastiche of the rocket trio

i like warren! genuinely, though, i think he was a major figure in 90s/00s american manga reception whose work probably played a significant role in popular perception of what “manga-style art” looked like during that time period. not least because he literally illustrated a “how to draw manga” book

i only played it recently but was really delighted by it! i think most of the stuff on my list is available on tubi. def don’t sleep on errementari, it’s a really charming dark fantasy/folkloric basque-language film, and my go-to rec for “something pleasantly spooky most people haven’t heard of”
