I’ve had right achilles pain starting from last night after community ed basketball scrimmage, and a Mayo Clinic article I found suggests it’s achilles tendinitis, “common in middle-aged people who play sports like basketball only on the weekends.” I’m 30! 💀 gotta start doing calf raises I guess 🥴

And mostly, it’s worked out for the best. Even if we just assess for dollar value, a 2025 analysis found that for every $1 invested in the U, the state reaped $16.75. In other words, every Minnesotan benefits from our robust systems of public higher education.
It’s been striking to me that while conversation about the budget inside the U has been substantial, I haven’t yet seen Minnesotan politicians addressing these potential cuts as a crisis. Part of that is because public universities like the U have made a trade-off, growing increasingly corporate and independent (despite publicly appointed regents) as public funding has collapsed. As a share of the budget, state funding has plummeted over the decades, falling to about 15%, compared to 39% in 1997. If that’s what you want, then fine. But did we ever have a public debate about whether that’s what Minnesotans actually want?
If you don’t want to more significantly fund the university, which bits are you eager to cut away? If it’s instruction and student services, here’s what happens.

UMN sent out a survey to bike riders on campus a few months ago to renew their bike friendly cert & I complained re: traffic enforcement on WashAve. the last couple of years there’s been more private cars driving there, parking in the bike lane etc and I have not seen UMNPD give a ticket once 😭

Just made the tofu mushroom marsala from @isachandra.bsky.social 29-minute vegan and 😱 so good!! Worth turning the oven on for even in this heat. Made the 3 bean berbere chili last night too which was also great. I haven’t cooked in so long - it’s great to be back in the kitchen.
