Many students come to the #datascience classroom having mostly used Google Docs and not understanding file directories. To teach where to store & find their files I created this physical directory for my students. Everything was in the large box. I took out folders & files out one by one in class.

There is a large box on a chair with a sign that reads week01-intro-toolkit. Then there are vertically-aligned smaller boxes on a desk that read data, homework, lecture, section. Next to data box there is a paper that reads harvard-art-museum.csv and another paper that reads README.md. Next to the homework box the paper reads hw01-intro-toolkit.qmd. Next to the lecture box the paper reads lec01b-notes.qmd. Next to the section box the three papers read 01-installations.R, 02-test-installations.qmd, 03-bonus.qmd. Below the section box there three papers that read .gitignore, README.md, week01-intro-toolkit.Rproj.

Today I gave a talk on active learning to (mostly) statistics educators. After my talk there was Q&A. Then there was a moderator leading a discussion. By minute 50 nobody has mentioned "AI". I then pointed this out. The most peaceful 50 minutes of my day!!!

That’s also when I learned to compulsively lock my computer when not in use (another requirement). Also it was a perfect study spot for me in general. Even custodial staff did not have the key to the room. It was just the PI other than me and the PI visited the room only once a year or so.

When I was in grad school, I used confidential data that was sent on a CD with the encryption sent a week later. It had to be stored on a computer that is not plugged to the internet in a room without windows. When I read of AI stealing scientists’ research data/ideas, I think of that data.

I was today years old when I learned Dolly Parton recorded Woody Guthrie's song "Deportee (Plane Wreck At Los Gatos)" in 1980. It's a heartbreaking song about immigration and specifically deportation plane that crashed in 1948 killing dozens of Mexican "bracero" workers. Her version is beautiful💔

I later met the person and talked to them at another event at JSM. This year‘s JSM goal was meeting him. Next JSM I will convince him to teach some Bayesian regression in his linear models class. The following JSM he will be “too Bayesian” himself.

I heard someone talk to the publisher during JSM saying that they can’t use this book for teaching because it is “too Bayesian”. Can you imagine anyone call a book “too frequentist?” This is a great book by the way.
