Also for the scale of *presumed* global LNG demand in the coming decades. Chinese PV is about to get more efficient (TOPCon, and now perovskite tandem cells on the horizon!) + new BESS advances with CATL saying sodium-ion could reach 70% less than LFP. This is "energy security" for EM/DMs.

It's an interesting tell about lithium prices - many expect them to remain structurally depressed for the rest of the decade (just like me, heyo!) which implies that LFP would further cut into the prospective BESS market that Na-ion producers were anticipating to have opportunity in.

Agreed. Revitalizing US shipbuilding would be a decadal project, even with massive industrial policy and coordination with Korean chaebols. The only major US-built ship in recent years was a jack-up vessel to install offshore wind - a sector that this administration is destroying in real time.

Both PEM and alkaline electrolyzers do not use cobalt - they use platinum and palladium metals like iridium. Substations/transformers use silicon-steel/grain oriented steel, not cobalt-blended alloys. Those are used in aerospace & defense applications, not the power sector.

Milo McBride @milomcbride.bsky.social · 09/02/2025
What other net-zero technologies is it used in? I guarantee you none. Cobalt's other application is in high-grade steel alloys that are not required in solar panels, wind turbines, or nuclear power plants. Source from World Bank:

Milo McBride @milomcbride.bsky.social · 09/02/2025
I'm not. Cobalt is only used in a decreasing share of lithium-ion batteries - no other net-zero technologies. This paper doesn't argue otherwise. The pillaging of the DRC is horrific. It's also inaccurate to describe this niche metal as "essential." Copper and aluminum are essential for net-zero.
