(6/7) As for "a following sonorant triggers nasalization": vowels are sonorants too, yet 국어 is [구거]. Only nasals trigger it. But focusing on sonorants was a good instinct. The key is that Korean avoids rising sonority across syllables.

So they're meeting eachother halfway..? Since ㄱ(obstruent) and ㄹ(liquid) are 2 steps apart and "nasal" is the meeting point between them... they both meet halfway and become nasals... (with the order being first ㄹ--> ㄴ and then ㄱ--> ㅇ) and the trigger is the "syllable constraint law"... 🤯

(5/7) Why ㄴ? ㄹ and ㄴ are both alveolar sonorants. They differ only in airflow (sides of the tongue vs. the nose). So ㄹ→ㄴ is the smallest change that lowers sonority. Word-initial 로동 → 노동 shows the same tendency.

(4/7) This also explains related changes: 신라 [실라] (ㄴ.ㄹ → ㄹㄹ), and exceptions like 의견란 [의견난], where the repair goes the other way. Davis & Shin (1999) argue this constraint drives both nasalization and lateralization in Korean.

(3/7) A common explanation is the Syllable Contact Law. Sonority: obstruents < nasals(ㅁ,ㄴ,ㅇ) < liquids(ㄹ) < vowels. Languages avoid a rise in sonority across a syllable boundary. In 심.리 (ㅁ.ㄹ) it rises, so ㄹ→ㄴ. In 국.녁 (ㄱ.ㄴ) it still rises, so ㄱ→ㅇ. Both steps follow one principle.

(1/7) Short answer: ㄹ doesn't trigger nasalization. ㄹ itself first becomes ㄴ, and that ㄴ then nasalizes the preceding consonant. So the order is the reverse of your guess: 국력 → 국녁 → [궁녁]
