I don't really care about anyone doing this 100% of the time/edge cases but if the website/conversation is in a language, that's why using the title in the language is used. It makes for clearer conversation 95% of the time Also it's bad form to necro posts like this. This is not elitism.

We're talking in English why would we arbitrarily decide not to for titles? If there's a localized name for something, that's what it's intended to be called by the people who made it and approved the name Why would you use a foreign language term for something when you're speaking in English?

The thing is, overseas fans broadly dislike this. At best, they feel condescended to! I remember the case of Sword Art Online Alicization in particular being a case where it was well-meaning but ultimately insulting and caused nothing but headaches for overseas publishers, who were not advised

There's quite a few cases like this from the late 2010s I recall, where publishers proactively removed things or had alternate cuts for international distribution out of an abundance of caution. The last thing committees like to see is for their anime become a negative "story" in the press abroad.

In cases like this, the overseas licensor doesn't have any deciding power for things like this. They *may* be asked, "hey, we this is uncomfortable or sensitive, should we remove it?" but it would only guide the decision, not make it.

Thanks for sharing this, Lynzee! A fun fact about Solo Leveling: from what my research can tell, more people have watched Solo Leveling on Crunchyroll this year than Frieren, despite Frieren releasing a second season in January. It's weird the disconnect it has with so many parts of the community.

I agree, but the people with the most nuanced perspectives on anime are also the people who are most likely to pirate. CR's unbelievable growth in the last few years is partially just by expanding the audience to new people who haven't experienced anything but bad bootleg sites and Netflix.

Most of CR and HIDIVE's deals have a degree of revenue share, so it's not strange for licensors to request another MG on renewal. Often, that's an MG that won't recoup, because most catalog gets so little viewership, so it's rarely "worth it" from a strict cost-per-acquistion POV to renew if so.

It depends, many contracts auto-renew until one party decides otherwise, or parties are comfortable keeping up status quo of the last deal until it makes sense to do a proper renegotiation. A shocking amount of expirations I've seen are issues getting the right people communicating / responding.

Apothecary Diaries is an easy win for them that's both very popular *and* meaningful to the audience, so it was nice to see it well-loved at their Anime Expo booth, but I'd really like to see proactive pushes for critical darlings and catalog classics, even just once in a while

in 5 years, no one will remember the name of whatever seasonal isekai gets all the real estate on the Crunchyroll app, but they will still remember BBB and Black Lagoon, especially the taste makers, anime evangelists, and the crowd that could easily be CR's most loyal audience

on one hand, this reaction is too much, because CR is generally very good about maintaining their library in every country outside of Asia, CR has the biggest catalog & renew at the highest rates (it's extremely bad form that they don't announce expirations in advance, though)

crunchyroll recently lost the licenses to ~a dozen anime, and so we've seen the home video prices for them skyrocket, a bunch of anger online, and headlines about "Crunchyroll's purge" these are some great anime and people are right to be frustrated, but there's more to it
