Trump's Alcatraz talk reminds me of Hito Steyerl's essay in which she recounts a once retired tank that rolls off the pedestal and into battle. Most of the essay is patented art ramble but this paragraph is good www.e-flux.com/journal/70/6...

What does all this mean for the museum? First of all, one could say that history only exists if there is a tomorrow—if tanks remain locked up within historical collections and time moves on. The future only happens if history doesn’t occupy and invade the present. The museum must render the tank useless upon entry, the way old cannons are filled with cement before being displayed in parks. Otherwise, the museum becomes an instrument for prolonging stasis by preserving the tyranny of a partial, partisan history, which also turns out to be a great business opportunity.

Another excellent submission to the Illinois state flag contest that didn't make the official top ten. There's just something that feels so quaintly midwestern about this one. The explanation of meaning left something to be desired, it's unclear how that factored into the commission's decisions.

Explain the meaning behind your flag
The arrangement of blue, white, red, and stars is reminiscent of the shield on the Illinois Seal. The flower represents the natural prairie landscape of Illinois, and its colors are a reference to the colors of the sun rising in the Seal. The stars are the same in shape and amount as the flag of Chicago, our state's largest city. The two stripes are a reference to the antennae of the Sears Tower/ Willis Tower. The dark blue wavy line represents the rivers that flow through our state.
