Going to BAMS/MSA2026 #WeirdModernisms? Join our seminar Caring Modernists? on care as a relational experience in literary works, artistic forms and cultural traditions & how modernist scholars might better perform care in our own communities. Sign up here: bit.ly/42PQGo6
Caring Modernists?

Modernist creative production was characterised by networks and relationships among friends, partners, family, editors, and authors (Micir, 2019; Phillips and Vorano, 2025). However, the care work, care ethics, and caring relationships which underpin modernistnetworks remain under-theorised. We invite explorations of how modernist works are related to care, and how care ethics can alter our interactions with modernist texts.
Questions we will explore include:
•	Can we call modernists caring?
•	How do avant-garde experiments capture experiences of care?
•	How is literary production embedded in/indebted to practices of care?
•	How does modernist literary production resist insularity? How might care be a form of disruption in modernist literary depictions?
•	How do these definitions of care and inter-relationality chime with or challenge modernist aesthetics?
This seminar will explore care as a relational experience in literary works, artistic forms and cultural traditions. We are also interested in how modernist scholars might better perform care in our own communities.

Rather than a traditional position paper, we invite participants to bring an archival document, an extract, a poem, an object, or a photograph that captures some of the questions/themes of the seminar. From this, we ask for 1-2 pages of provocation/context to begin our conversations on the day.

We invite participants to think about: modernism, care and: networks of cultural production, affect and emotion, thing theory, ecology and the environment, ethics, labour rights, precarity, and the posthuman.

Feel free to write to the organisers with any questions:

Our third university of the day getting into trouble is Birmingham City University, where all the staff have been offered severance terms. It's a tsunami now I'm afraid. www.birminghammail.co.uk/news/midland...
