Lots of humor. None of it felt misplace. First-person shots didn't feel forced, because they were used during scenes in cramped spaces. Cregger was right that more horror should be in the snow. The first act of the movie was very pretty.

Details (light spoilers): - Bryan is a normal dude totally in over his head like most RE protags in their first appearance, especially Ethan and Grace. - He goes from farmhouse to city/sewer to hospital/lab, like a lot of games do. - He has to manage ammo and switch guns.

Finally watched Zach Cregger's Resident Evil. Simply put: he really did adapt the feeling of playing an RE game, specifically what feels like a spin-off that never got made. And frankly, I'd prefer this over a retelling of a story you actually *can* play directly.
