I mean, that’s the normal way successor states have been treated since…Westphalia? It’s a big deal, violations generally only occur with revolutions. (My potential hot take here is that regardless of shared king, if Canada reneges on treaties, most gov’ts of Aotearoa/NZ would throw a fit)

I mean that almost all institutions would be the exact same, under the exact same pressures, except for a very small number of bodies not related to policy

I guess but if you think that inertia is sufficient, I would think verbiage like “the republic is the incorporated successor to the crown in law and diplomacy” would serve to tie that inertia together? Like, we wouldn’t expect the republic of Canada to renege on the realm of Canada’s debts

Oh absolutely, no question And Canadians aren’t emotionally attached to *their* constitution because, as I understand it, it’s an entire law library (literally, not just in interpretation)

Sure, but then that takes me back to: it’s gonna be the same people either way. And most of the same institutions. “The crown is holding them back, a republic wouldn’t” doesn’t make sense to me w/o a mechanism (and Isaiah described a plausible one; not sure if I buy effect size but still)

Hrm. But if the US is Trumpist but being expansive and non-lib, I think they’d still think that’s bad? Like, Trump’s adventures Venezuela and Iran are opposed by the left, while they seem fine with him being Putin friendly. I guess I haven’t checked into what they think about Canada.

Definitely agree with the latter, and yeah I think your diagnosis in the first tweet makes sense. He wasn’t exactly endorsing it.

Mike Wasson @mikewasson.net · 16h
Yeah. I suppose the one real downside is that now you have to do stuff like occasionally pass emergency legislation regularized with all the other Commonwealth realms to formally keep Andrew off the throne of Canada. But again, probably worth it.

Oh yeah, I think it's a bad idea, just people make impossibility arguments and I don't think it's impossible, just an unnecessary pain in the ass. Montréal is worth a crown.

I feel like it could be written in a way that doesn't create meaningful legal obligations, merely, like, relations. But I completely agree--the Canadian monarchy is an almost cost-free system, it works, keep it unless people decide the indignity of kings is too much. Which they some day might.

My intuitions are American, so you can be annoyed with me that way. I just really wanted to know what difference makes it work and a republic fail, and I've mostly just gotten "well, obviously it won't!" But international pressure because lol royalty media attention seems extremely plausible to me!

If that's the real thing that leads to change, suppose that the founding of the republic required that the treaties be held in surety with the British monarch and his successors--no formal power, nominal role, not head of state. Does that work? (Although, of course, if *we* get rid of monarchy...🤷)

Mike Wasson @mikewasson.net · 16h
Thanks. I would think in a post-monarchy situation, there could be an analogous "honour of the Republic"? And even written into its founding documents.

Mike Wasson @mikewasson.net · 16h
And for the record I’m probably more characteristically “don’t upset something that works,” monarchy seems to weirdly but successfully hold Canada together even if most are indifferent to the thing itself just some objections sounded weak to me and wanted to understand.

Thank you—I appreciate an actual process description since people tend to talk around it. But since the crown as in British institutions hasn’t formally mattered in ~40 years, it was sufficient to name check the institution to get domestic pressure?

Mike Wasson @mikewasson.net · 16h
Oh I think that’s great! I’m just confused why people don’t think that would continue under republican institutions correctly formulated to preserve these rights.

Like, since patriation of the Canadian constitution in the 80s, it’s not like a treaty violation is going to go to the Privy Council, no?

Mike Wasson @mikewasson.net · 16h
I guess what I don’t get is why they would be any more trusting of monarchal Canada, since it’s in the end the same people and mostly the same institutions

Mike Wasson @mikewasson.net · 16h
…to reincorporate the treaty holder as a republican entity (possibly still called “the crown” for the lolz) But people who know this better have made clear that at least some nations are very skeptical about this, or perhaps actively hostile to it, and would demand renegotiation
010
Mike Wasson @mikewasson.net · 16h
Yeah in theory it seems like it should be easy to say 1) the treaties were with the crown of England/GB/UK (as case may be) 2) they’ve been inherited by the Crown of Canada 3) so since 1->2 was fine it should be possible…

(Thinking) it’s definitely heteronormative because it’s straight patriarchal culture colonizing queer spaces. Like, when you put it that way, it might even be rape culture, the most patriarchal thing possible. Definitely not closeted exploration of alternative sexualities. Definitely.

I came at this initially thinking it wasn’t at root being pro-Russia, it was being anti-US, but I’ve wavered on that. (The irony that they can find themselves on the same side as the US president!) Or perhaps it has gone on so long that it doesn’t really matter.

I am admittedly quite confused by a definition of “realist” meaning that Ukraine should do something that will practically guarantee its complete subjugation; I know it’s an IR term of art, but still

Yeah I’m definitely at the point where a “benevolent dictatorship” should be taken as an equivalent level of unreality as “everyone will just do the right thing so we don’t really need a state or hierarchy or bosses do we”

So I think the difficulty is that “astronaut” is doing double duty. It can mean either 1. A job role that focuses on space-going 2. A person who happens to have gone to space Maybe 1 can be extended to space tourists in preparation? (Both by convention restricted to western bloc countries ofc)

I think generally navies do call their members something like “sailors” or “seamen” regardless of whether they’ve been on a ship. And it’s seems natural to say “the astronaut boarded the rocket for liftoff” even if it’s their first time.
