"even if the document weren’t so inadequate and official renaming so pathetic, nobody is left in Oval Office* w/ self-respect or competence to spell 'United States' correctly... nobody gives a rat’s ass to make propaganda at least look serious" @emptywheel.bsky.social emptywheel.net/2026/09/30/i...
another banger from Marcy: In addition, the single thing that such documents must do is assign accountability for implementing it — naming the person who will go to jail for hacks that do not function as intended. This does not. Bullet 2 “empowers” an internal team to ensure that “any issues identified are remediated,” but it doesn’t say that that internal team (or anyone else) has to do the remediation. Bullet 4 requires a committee on the board that will “receive reports” and “ensure any issues identified are remediated.” But it doesn’t hold them accountable for remediating those issues themselves. The passive voice lurks where it is most dangerous, where someone is accountable for remediating the things that go wrong.

But even if the document weren’t so inadequate and the official renaming so pathetic, there is no one left inside the Oval Office with the self-respect or competence to spell “United States” correctly. There is no one inside the Oval Office who gave a rat’s ass to make this propaganda at least look serious.

This was not a commitment to make AI safe for humanity. Rather, it was a commitment to collectively tell the public that the Masters of the Universe can take care of this themselves, without regulation.

And even the propaganda was too slovenly to get basic details right.

Also why can't we call it a palinilap? Or an emordrome. Since apparently we're renaming stuff these days.

They don't have to outrun the tiger of reality, just the slow runners that make up their base.

Everything he says is basically "What will you say to demonstrate that you are prepared to live in my reality?" The odder the reality, the more apparent the performance.

My latest cartoon for @newscientist.com
A figure stands in a barren landscape; reaches for the lever on a large, eccentric contraption covered in wires, pipes, dials and buttons; looks over towards two figures inside a bunker and says:

"'Trust me, it's safe' would sound a lot more reassuring if you weren't saying it from inside a concrete bunker."

Believe it or not, a lot of people do not have to-do lists. And the the lists many of them have are not structured for an ai agent to be helpful. This isn’t groundbreaking. If you have ever watched the evening news or read even a single story about people who aren’t like you, it is pretty basic

Siri, show me the deliberate destruction of eight decades of American-led international diplomacy and cooperation in one photograph:
Screenshot of a September 28, 2026, post on ex-Twitter by right-wing foreign policy analyst, professor, author and former Trump Department of Defense senior policy adviser Matthew Koenig, showing the lobby of the US State Department adorned with 200 American flags:

“The US State Department lobby used to display the flags of the roughly 200 countries with which the US maintains diplomatic relations. Now, it displays 200 American flags, to remind State Department employees who they work for.”

#Russia Whitaker’s statement illustrates EXACTLY why the #US has failed completely in #Ukraine: They do not understand the objectives of the parties involved in the war. Consequently, success through diplomacy is impossible. ⤵️

AI #slopaganda is not so much about fakes or disinformation. It's about aligning the world with your preformulated descriptions of it, making reality disappear behind its formulaic image, rendering visible all your fears at once in order to enjoy them more. It's a technology of fascist daydreaming

I long for a back-to-basics web: Markdown for text, JPEG images, no video, no Javascript or other client-side scripting, writable by a human being with a text editor. Make it as advertising/corporate hostile as possible. And above all keep it *small*. In other words, web like it's 1996 again.

DoorDash spent $1.4M trying to stop Zohran Mamdani from becoming mayor. This week's historic $131.5M enforcement action against DoorDash for underpaying NYC delivery workers shows why. Yet another reminder that the only thing that can beat organized money is organized people.

In a wage-theft settlement, DoorDash now has to pay its workers around 100 times what it spent trying to beat Zohran Mam

Any other administration, if for some reason it was trying to make a version of this statement, would say in the second half that they were FIGHTING BACK against the "fake news" (which they might also rephrase). It's revealing that this administration has to say it's "instituting an assault".
